OCT 7th, 1986: SLAYER RELEASE "REIGN IN BLOOD"

34 years ago, on this day, thrash metal masters SLAYER released the album that changed it all, "Reign in Blood". Opening with the ultimate violent thrash metal masterpiece "Angel of Death", the album delivers almost 29 minutes of pure speed and aggression. With the line-up that consisted in Tom Araya on bass and vocals, Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman on guitars and Dave Lombardo on drums, the band shows a more polished yet more intense sound than in their previous "Hell Awaits". Tracks like "Necrophobic", "Postmortem" and "Reign in Blood" are total classics of the style and are a huge influence for many bands in the thrash /black or death metal realm. The album was released Def Jam Recordings, the label that released many of Slayer´s classic full lengths.

YSGAROTH RELEASE "STORM OVER A BLACK SEA" + VIDEO FOR "SACRED"

PRESS RELEASE:

Vancouver’s YSGAROTH are releasing their debut album “Storm Over a Black Sea” and it is rife with vicious riffs and thought-provoking atmosphere.

The first single to entice listeners is “Sacred”. It contains a simple message: despite its imperfections, life is beautiful. The world we’ve been given is an amazing thing that should be protected and celebrated, and we owe it everything we are and have. The cycle of life and death is so much greater than any single person, and it is the one constant that we can rely on. We are born from the ashes of the old, and so will the new be born from the ashes of ourselves. Ysgaroth continues with how the track came to be:

“Unlike most Ysgaroth songs that come from the verses being written first, the chorus was actually the first piece of this song that we came up with. Sacred also slowly got faster and faster as we started practicing it until it became the thrash-influenced ripper it is today.”

Ysgaroth was initially formed as a studio black metal project but over time, a lineup was fleshed out and the songs got more structurally ambitious, a sludge influence began to creep into the band along with tinges of hardcore-influenced drumming and exceptional musical bass playing alongside razor-sharp guitars

Anyone who has seen Ysgaroth live and liked what they’ve heard will love this - and we hope those who are on the fence will probably love it too.

Recommended for fans of Skeletonwitch, Enslaved, and Wolves in the Throne Room, the single “Sacred” and its music video can be heard below.

“Storm Over a Black Sea” will be available on November 13, 2020

“Shapeless Misery” is the second full length by Doom / Death project THE SOMBRE. A momentous and sorrowful album, in the vein of the Doom / Death pioneers of the early Nineties, and a masterfully heavy sonic achievement wrought with pain and despair. The Sombre’s new album is hypnotically haunting and bleak, dark and ominous, however also enriched by a palpable gothic presence from start to finish.

Combining monstrously downtuned and heavy riffs with shrieking vocals howling painful litanies in an agonising anguish, “Shapeless Misery” is a mid-paced masterpiece of melancholic and raw beauty.

FFO: My Dying Bride, Anathema and Paradise Lost.

BIO

The Sombre is another great offspring coming from the prolific mind of Maurice De Jong, who is already behind illustrious projects such as Gnaw Their Tongues, The Night Specter, HAGETISSE and Golden Ashes, just to mention a few.

The first album “Into the Beckoning Wilderness” was released in June 2019 via Kapmes Records.

On the 22nd of November 2020 The Sombre will release their second album “Shapeless Misery” on digital, CDs and tapes via Brucia Records.

UNCLE WOE RELEASE "PHANTOMESCENCE"

PRESS RELEASE:

Canada’s Uncle Woe brings you a contemplative, progressive doom album “Phantomescence” that was completely conceived and recorded in pandemic induced isolation.

“Phantomescence” deviates from the first Uncle Woe album as the band moves forward from a solo studio project. It is an easily digestible, logical next step in the band’s evolution; elements, which made the first LP, “Our Unworn Limbs”, engaging and intriguing are present again on this offering; expanded upon, polished, and moderately better produced. The new album deals with death in a much broader and less personal sense, and also contains a lot of abstract, dream sequence type elements.

Currently, as a two-piece, Rain Fice and Nicholas Wowk worked on their parts separately, shared them online, and managed to pull off the second album as the band.

Today leading up to the album's release, the duo are sharing their second single "A Map of Dead Stars" via its premiere on Doomed & Stoned HERE:  https://doomedandstoned.com/post/631247451612971008/unclewoe

The band adds about the track:

"The closing number on the album, 'A Map of Dead Stars', probably covers the most musical ground within a single song, and is somewhat difficult to describe in terms of common verse and chorus sections. It starts with a very bluesy, psychedelic passage built around a hypnotic 9/4 bassline, and features a fine slice of expressive lead playing. The bridge between this section and the first ‘verse’ comes in as a hefty wall of beefy sound, not dissimilar to the vibe one might expect from some sort of astral ‘battle doom,’ like Conan or Slomatics. This lets it go into some progressive stoner, alternating verse/chorus sections in 11/4, which give way to a slow, almost groove metal bridge in straight 4/4. We travel from there into an extended 6/4 section featuring almost ethereal, very clean vocal harmonies set against a simple, churning and harmonious guitar/bass arpeggio section, which leads back into that Slomatics style wall of sound section, and finally out through a reprisal of the initial psychedelic blues section. -fade to black.

Lyrically, this song is loosely based on a short sci-fi story I’m writing, about an ALMOST tide-locked planet, whose daily rotation takes several lifetimes to complete. The sunlit side of the planet is a scorching desert, and the dark side of the planet is a frozen, barren wasteland. The inhabitants of the planet are designed to live in the dusk and dawn slivers at the edges of the planet, perpetually migrating with the habitable section of soft light. They follow ancient maps of the stars, which lead them along safe passages over generations. The people in the dawn and dusk regions are ultimately unaware that each other exists, until such a time as the people on the dusk side eventually traverse the polar region and ultimately wage war on the peaceful dawn-dwelling peoples. If budget weren’t an issue, I would LOVE to see a video for this song as a fairly literal, short-film interpretation. Sadly, I am not independently wealthy. haha"

The full album “Phantomescence” is due out October 23rd via Packard Black Productions and available for digital, CD and vinyl pre-order HERE: https://unclewoe.bandcamp.com/album/phantomescence

Many chugging, bludgeoning passages are offset by expansive and contemplative, subdued, almost post-rock soundscapes, making Uncle Woe suitable for fans of Yob, Chrome Ghost and Deftones.

About:

Hailing from the oft frozen hills of rural Canada, Uncle Woe is a phantom limb, wielding a bludgeoning tool against mostly true tales of bittersweet sorrow, revenge, and regret.

The bleak desolation of Bancroft, Ontario spawned Uncle Woe in 2019 when Rain Fice grew weary of floundering in non-committed projects and instead dove into songwriting mode with a rough idea of his ideal sound and started carving out what would become the first Uncle Woe LP “Our Unworn Limbs”.

After the album was released in 2019 and started to pick up some buzz, a full band began to form. However, the pandemic was not far off and the band whittled down to a 2 piece. Before lockdown began, Uncle Woe managed to lock down the rough elements of what would become the second album “Phantomescence”, Fice expanded on them, and after being fed to drummer Nicholas Wowk, and recording remotely, the album was complete: a meandering exploration of death and dreams. Many chugging, bludgeoning passages are offset by expansive and contemplative, subdued, almost post-rock soundscapes.

As Uncle Woe begins to hit their stride, fans can look forward to the band putting out music pretty much indefinitely, plans are in motion for a third album already.

The band's second album “Phantomescence” will be available digitally, CD, and on vinyl on October 23rd via Packard Black Productions.

SHAIDAR LOGOTH RELEASE "CHAPTER III: THE VOID GOD" EP

PRESS RELEASE:

Sentient Ruin says:

"We’re honored to work again with USBM soul-incinerators SHAIDAR LOGOTH as we proudly announce the release of "Chapter III: The Void God" their brand new double album scheduled for release in early November on etched vinyl 2XLP and tape for the Americas, while the vinyl release for Europe will be handled by new imprint Cavsas (a division of dark industrial label Cyclic Law).

"Chapter III: The Void God", is a massive three-sided etched 2XLP that that sees the Minnesota black metal specters completing both musically and narratively their inaugural trilogy opened in 2011 with "Chapter I: The Peddler". The Peddler has become The Ritualist, and now summoned The Void God to consume the world and rebuild it in its own image. Three years in the making, "The Void God" sees Shaidar Logoth dwell in familiar torments as well as evolve into a new transfiguration of themselves, dominated by a more defiant and unpredictable experimentation of moods and torn by a more profound and enigmatic dualism than ever before. Throughout the four monstrous songs that comprise the forty-eight minute doble LP, the band's sound shapeshifts dramatically, designing increasingly claustrophobic and erratic trajectories and leaving the listener as helpless bystander to a disfigured and mangled ritual, while the songs evolve in and out of each other in a constant duality of ominous abjection and puzzling beauty.

A preview of the staggering album has been made available via Invisible Oranges, who in unveiling the song “Consume Pieces of God” have remarked that “Shaidar Logoth take riff-writing to another plateau [...] as your mind is torn between shedding tears at beautiful riffage and sitting in goosebumps because of the sheer abstract density of the result. Combined with well-balanced clean/rough production, and tons of moments that feel like gut-punches (like the two-minute mark in the song streaming above), Chapter III: The Void God leaves basically nothing else to be asked for.” You can check out the full feature HERE: https://www.invisibleoranges.com/shaidar-logoth-premiere/

Sonically ungraspable but stylistically grounded in the fiercest and proudest black metal tradition, on "Chapter III: The Void God" Shaidar Logoth have conjured the same inverted and lurid atmospheres we've seen in bands like Leviathan, Funeral Mist, Misþyrming and Sargeist, while their unique and unmatched penchant in eviscerating beauty and grace has probably given birth to their most luminous and magnificent album to date.

Always enigmatic, withdrawn, and rigorously shadow-dwelling, Shaidar Logoth silently emerged in Minnesota in late 2010 from a vision of mastermind and multi-instrumentalist Steven Henningsgard. Henningsgard set out to write and record years of ideas and riffs completely on his own, enlisting vocalist Adam Clemans (of Wolvhammer, Noose Rot, Skeletonwitch fame etc.) to help him complete his wretched vision. The result materialized as their hideous and foul debut demo/EP Chapter I: The Peddler - 30 minutes of raw and unforgiving black metal which viciously showcased the band's own plagued extreme metal formula made of ancestral and pestilent Scandinavian black metal fused with modern and unorthodox elements ranging from trance-inducing vortex-like passages, to progressive/psychedelic dirges, and obscure ambient ritualism. Their proper debut album Chapter II: The Ritualist surfaced four years later in 2015 revealing a massive evolution and broad improvement across their already magnificently detrimental sound architecture, with their songwriting and their sound especially now hinting at beast-like traits. Across its massive four tracks The Ritualist explored every notion of aural misery imaginable, tormenting the listener with lengthly and winding flailings of venomous black metal punctuated with dismal drone and dark ambient passages and thick layers of infernal and hallucinatory atmospherics. Only apparently dormant but never really dead and continuing their religiously recluse existence as a non live/touring art, as per their tradition Shaidar Logoth then slithered back into the shadows to nurture and feed the third chapter in their hideous existence...."

UTHULLUN RELEASE "DIRGES FOR THE VOID"

PRESS RELEASE:

Wolves Of Hades is proud to present UTHULLUN’s highly anticipated debut album, “Dirges for the Void”, on vinyl LP format. The record is set to be released on November 13th 2020.

Harmony | Discord | Sorrow | Ecstasy.

Succeeding an EP self-released the past year, the enigmatic ensemble cryptically called UTHULLUN undertakes a crossing through the uttermost nether regions of mind, body, and spirit. As our terrestrial realm is overwhelmed in havoc and bewilderment, the ghastly tome of harmony and discordance aptly titled “Dirges for the Void” hails and scorns the grimness of such hopelessness. For every melody breathes in and below a suffocating miasma of scorching dissonance and that dichotomic element permeates throughout the whole of this grand work.

Musically defiant, overtly intense, this seven-track ordeal marks a step forward in UTHULLUN’s evolution in a multifold way, whether through the piercing technicality of the overall performance or the complexity of the arrangements. Indeed, one faces a maelstrom of sublimely intricate patterns, dissonant shapes, and razor-sharp riffs played with supreme precision and multi-layered tenacity without ever losing an organic feel and depth that at times gets lost in other more dexterous and conceptually ambitious music.

The sonic depth of the production definitely benefits the projection of such a grandiose and multilayered aura, for its cohesive and organic nature compels the music to breathe without sounding forced or artificial. This dynamic attitude transpires within the magnificent rhythmic section. The drumming execution seizes the listener from beginning to end on a tastefully flawless endeavor that for all its elaborate and ornate performance manages to constantly carry a sentient touch of grooving complexity, a close accomplice of the serpentine bass impulses that widen the sonic pallet and enhance the weight of this (dis)harmonic undergo.

As one falls imbued in the instrumental presence, demonic shrieks and screams blaze throughout “Dirges for the Void”, a vocal performance as vicious as it conveys a mystic and somberness that confer an almost otherworldly feel to these 40 minutes.

Released by Wolves of Hades on a Limited Edition LP, UTHULLUN casts a step forward in the direction of the abyss with an opus of sinister Black Metal emanated from the Void, a requiem to the dying soul of a rotten world.

ARRAYAN PATH RELEASE "THE MARBLE GATES TO APEIRON"

PRESS RELEASE:

Band: ARRAYAN PATH

Album: The Marble Gates to Apeiron

Country: Cyprus

Genre: Epic Power Metal

Label: Pitch Black Records

Release date: November 27th, 2020

The Epic Power Metal force that is ARRAYAN PATH returns with the band’s 8th full-length, a follow-up to 2018’s double-disc album “Archegonoi”.

Titled “The Marble Gates to Apeiron”, the new album is due to be released on November 27th on CD and Digital.

The new ARRAYAN PATH album is much heavier than its predecessor and more on the “up-tempo” scale, while at the same time maintaining all the characteristics and trademarks that make up the unmistakable style and sound of ARRAYAN PATH.

Nicholas Leptos, the band’s driving force (also current vocalist of legendary WARLORD) comments: “We worried less about doing something ‘out of the ordinary’ and more about writing good melodic metal songs. There was also more collaboration between the band members, maybe more than ever before!”

Lyric-wise, even though the new album is not a concept album, it does have a common theme running among the songs, one that deals with human nature as it has developed through the ages. For this reason the album is “divided” into 3 parts, with each part made up of 3 songs: The Past, The Present and The Future.

Even though the subject matter might seem varied between songs, as already mentioned there is a central theme that revolves around human reaction and response; from the destruction of our planet, to people’s quarrels regarding the pandemic, life, death, religion and mourning; and of course, somewhere in all that, the band’s favorite subject since forever: mythology!

The album was produced by Slava Selin and ARRAYAN PATH and mixed by Simone Mularoni who has given a breath of fresh air to the band’s music over the past few years. Artwork was done by Giannis Nakos at Remedy Art Designs.

The first single off the album (“A Silent Masquerade”) is available for streaming and free download together with its lyric video at www.pitchblackrecords.com where pre-order information is also available.
