La segunda edición del Summer Breeze Brasil tuvo lugar del 26 al 28 de abril de 2024 en Sao Paulo en el mismo lugar donde tuvo lugar la primera edición, es decir, el enorme Memorial de América Latina que está en el barrio de Barra Funda. El lugar es como un gran parque con dos grandes partes que se comunican a través de un gran puente (prepara tus piernas para subir y bajar por este puente). Tiene muy buen transporte porque está ubicado cerca de la estación de tren de Barra Funda y también hay un buen servicio de autobuses que conectan con el resto de Sao Paulo.
Tengo que decir que la organización fue muy buena, incluso mejor que en la primera edición del festival. Esta vez hubo un pequeño cambio en los escenarios. Todavía estaban los dos grandes (Hot Stage y Ice Stage) en una parte del Memorial, el que está cruzando el puente (Sun Stage) y el cuarto (Waves Stage) se trasladó desde el interior del Memorial al aire libre, cerca de los lugares de merchandising y el museo del terror. Como ya dijimos el año pasado, la edición brasileña no tiene nada que envidiar a los festivales más grandes de Europa.
LA ACCIÓN: VIERNES 26 DE ABRIL
Qué dilema: cómo elegir las bandas que vamos a ver: ¿deberíamos ver shows completos o deberíamos ver un par de canciones de cada banda para poder verlas todas? Decidimos hacer un mix. La primera banda que nos honró los oídos fue NESTOR. Con su aire de metal melódico ochentero, la banda subió al escenario con "Kids in a Ghost Town" con un sonido cristalino. A pesar de no tener una gran discografía, Nestor se formó en 1989 y luego se reformó en 2021. La banda entregó temas como "1989" o "Signed in blood" con una ejecución precisa.
Nos quedamos en la zona de los grandes escenarios para ver a los poderosos FLOTSAM & JETSAM. Fue genial ver a estos chicos: son una leyenda del thrah y cuentan con la incorporación de Ken Mary (Chastain, Fifth Angel y muchos más) a la batería desde 2019. La banda comenzó el show a todo trapo con el clásico "Hammerhead" de su álbum debut. Y claro que este fue un show para puro headbanging. El segundo tema fue otro clásico: "Desecrator" y el público disfrutó del primer mosphit del festival. La banda combinó su material más antiguo como "No Place for Disgrace" con temas más nuevos como "Brace for Impact" o "Prisoner of Time". Un show aplastante.
Después llegó EDU FALASCHI con todo su heavy power metal combinando temas de su carrera en solitario con clásicos de Angra. La banda sonó muy compacta y qué decir de la voz de Edu, impecable. Sonó muy bien a pesar del sol y el calor que empezaba a ser duro a la 1 de la tarde.
Cruzamos el puente para ver algunas canciones de la banda brasileña de horror metal ALCHEMIA. Su música es potente pero melódica y su imagen se podría describir como más cercana al black metal con pintura de cadáveres. Temas interesantes como el de apertura "Sacrifice" e "Inception" o "Ashes" fueron muy bien recibidos por el público. Fue increíble ver a esta banda con el sol ardiente a las 2 p.m.
Caminamos unos metros para ver a TYGERS OF PAN TANG en el Sun Stage. Esta banda es una leyenda del heavy metal y tienen mucha música para ofrecer en un solo espectáculo. Desde 2020, la banda cuenta con el gran guitarrista italiano Francesco Marras que le da un toque moderno al sonido de la banda. Clásicos como "Spellbound" de la era de John Sykes, el de apertura "Gangland" o "Suzie sonrió" de su álbum "Wild Cat", fueron entregados junto con los temas más nuevos como "Fire on the Horizon" y "Back for Good". Un espectáculo de heavy metal realmente bueno con momentos nostálgicos.
Cruzando el puente encontramos la máquina de thrash metal EXODUS. Abriendo con su clásico de todos los tiempos "Bonded by Blood", la banda no mostró piedad, mezclando sus himnos más recientes como "Blood In, Blood Out" o "Prescribing Horror" con su material de principios de 2000 como "Blacklist" y sus primeros clásicos como "And Then There Were None", "A Lesson in Violence" y "Piranha". La banda suena muy bien y es genial ver a Tom Hunting en vivo después de sus problemas de salud. El espectáculo terminó con el dúo de moshpit de "The Toxic Waltz" y "Strike of the Beast".
En 2023 vimos a SKID ROW en el festival Summer Breeze Brasil. Ahora era el momento de su ex cantante SEBASTIAN BACH. El espectáculo incluyó 12 canciones de Skid Row, 2 versiones, una de "Tom Sawyer" de Rush y "American Metalhead" de Painmuseum, y 3 temas de Sebastian. El espectáculo fue nostálgico pero poderoso, y Sebastian sigue siendo un gran showman. Una cosa que se necesita en la banda de Sebastian es otra guitarra. Eso es especialmente evidente al comparar el show de Skid Row en el Summer Breeze Brasil 2023 con este show. Claramente, temas como "Youth Gone Wild", "Piece of Me" o "Slave to the Grind" sonarían mejor con la adición de otra guitarra.
Luego fue el turno de MR BIG, la banda que cuenta con Billy Sheehan en el bajo y Paul Gilbert en la guitarra. Abrir con "Addicted to That Rush" fue una buena elección porque es un tema potente con buenas melodías y solos. El show me dio la sensación que siento con muchos de los álbumes de Mr. BIg: me encantan las melodías más rockeras, pero no disfruto mucho de las baladas. El show tuvo una pequeña desaceleración con el segmento que pasó de "Just Take my Heart" a la versión de Cat Stevens "Wild World" (con su balada "To be with you" en el medio de esta parte del show). Otros temas como "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy", "Alive and Kickin´" o "Lean into It" hicieron más ameno el espectáculo para el público.
Luego llegó GENE SIMMONS con un show encantador. Mezclando clásicos de Kiss con algunas versiones como "Ace of Spades" de Motorhead o "Communication Breakdown" de Led Zeppelin y una canción de la carrera en solitario de Gene, "Are You Ready". La banda toca canciones de Kiss que originalmente cantaba Paul Stanley, por lo que es realmente bueno ver que Gene deja espacio para que los otros músicos estén al frente, dejando que el guitarrista cante las canciones de Paul mientras Gene toca el bajo. El final del show fue obviamente con "I was made for loving you" y "Rock´n´roll all night" terminando esta pura fiesta.
Finalmente cruzamos el puente una última vez en este día para ver BIOHAZARD. Queríamos ver a la banda ahora que Evan Seinfeld está de vuelta al bajo y la voz. El comienzo del show fue realmente bueno con “Urban Discipline” y “Shades of Grey”, seguido de clásicos como “Tales from the Hard Side” y “Wrong Side of the Tracks”. También “Five blocks to the underground” y “Down for Life” hicieron que el público hiciera mosh y headbanging. La banda suena muy potente como siempre y la voz de Evan con su tono único sigue en muy buena forma. El final con “Punishment” y “Hold My Own” nos hizo volver al hotel haciendo headbanging listos para el día siguiente.
SÁBADO 27 DE ABRIL
Estábamos esperando volver a ver a NERVOSA con su nueva formación y fue una sorpresa verlas con la luz del día. Esta vez Helena Kotina pasó del bajo a la guitarra (en comparación con el show de 2022), y tenemos a Hel Pyre al bajo y a la nueva integrante, Gabriela Abud a la batería. Tras una breve intro llegó "Seed of Death" con toda la potencia que esta banda puede desatar. A pesar de algunos problemas de sonido, especialmente en la guitarra de Prika (cantó algunas canciones sin guitarra), la banda entregó un show aplastante, incluyendo la voz invitada de Mayara Puertas de Torture Squad.
La energía no paró cuando FORBIDDEN subió al escenario. Teníamos curiosidad por ver cómo el nuevo vocalista Norman Skinner lograría clavar los clásicos de Russ Anderson. Y seguro que lo hizo. Y también por ver en vivo a ese monstruo detrás de la batería llamado Chris Kontos. Fue un show muy potente y disfrutable con clásicos como "Twisted into Form", "Forbidden Evil" y "Step by Step". Todo lo bueno tiene un final, así que la banda se despidió con su clásico definitivo, "Chalice of Blood"
Caminando unos pasos hacia el otro escenario, vimos a GAMMA RAY con su show de heavy power metal lleno de melodías y estribillos pegadizos. "Land of the Free", "Master of Confusion", "Heaven Can Wait" y "Somewhere Out in Space" son solo algunas de las canciones que sonaron aquí.
Casi al mismo tiempo cruzamos el puente para ver a KORZUS. Su música es incluso más potente en vivo que en sus grabaciones. Especialmente los clásicos que se tocan con un sonido de guitarras y batería más moderno para encajar bien con el material más nuevo. "Discipline of Hate", "Mass Illusion", "Pay for your lies" y "Agony" fueron entregadas con guitarras aplastantes y la voz única de Marcello Pompeu, el alma mater de la banda.
Con casi 35 grados ANGRA subió al escenario con un show que combinó sus melodías con riffs potentes y los intrincados arreglos que son marca registrada de la banda. La voz de Fabio Lione está en muy buena forma, incluso con el calor que tuvo que soportar durante el show. Rafael Bittencourt es el único miembro original de esta formación pero ha logrado trabajar muy bien con el otro guitarrista, Marcelo Barbosa, quien lleva casi una década en Angra. Una combinación de temas muy antiguos con otros más nuevos son el núcleo del show: "Angels Cry", "Rebirth", "Time", "Vida Seca". Y el final con "Carry On" y "Nova era" nos dejó con ganas de más
Abriendo con "Blood, Tears, Dust" LACUNA COIL subió al escenario cuando el sol todavía estaba alto. Cristina Scabbia es una frontwoman realmente buena y me sorprendió que la banda tocara un montón de temas (no sé si no es la banda que más canciones tocó en el festival). La banda tenía un sonido realmente bueno y nos ofreció temas como "Heaven's a Lie", "My demon", "Sword of Anger" y la versión de Depeche Mode "Enjoy the Silence". Uno de los mejores shows del festival.
Luego vino HAMMERFALL con todo su heavy metal con un sonido enorme, especialmente en batería y guitarras. Joacim Cans tuvo una noche realmente buena y tuvo una buena respuesta del público. Abriendo con "Heeding the Call", la banda ofrece himno heavy metal tras himno heavy metal. Temas como "Renegade", "Hail to the King", "Last Man Standing" y el cierre "Hearts on Fire" fueron los mejores del show de la banda.
Nos quedamos en nuestro lugar para ver a EPICA, una banda que combina melodías enérgicas con partes climáticas y un contraste vocal sorprendente. Simone Simons es una gran frontwoman y es parte esencial de la banda al igual que Mark Jansen con su guitarra y su voz gutural. "Sensorium", "Unleashed", "The Skeleton Key", "Storm the Sorrow" (con Cristina Scabbia) fueron interpretadas en suelo brasileño. El final fue con una de mis favoritas, "Beyond the Matrix", y "Consign to Oblivion"
Con algo de dolor en las piernas cruzamos el puente para ver a JEFF SCOTT SOTO. El carismático ex cantante de Yngwie Malmsteen e incontables bandas más ofreció un espectáculo que combinó canciones de muchas partes de su carrera, principalmente Yngwie, Talisman y W.E.T. Temas como "Now Tus barcos están quemados", "Caught in the middle", "I am a viking", "I´ll see the light tonight" tuvieron una gran respuesta del público. También los temas de Talisman como "Blissful garden"; "Time after Time" y los de W.E.T., "The Call of the Wild" y "Comes down like rain". Como sorpresa, el guitarrista de HAMMERFALL (y también guitarrista de Talisman) Pontus Norgren subió al escenario para interpretar algunos temas como "Break your chains", "Give me a sign", "Just between us" y más.
Finalmente vimos WITHIN TEMPTATION en uno de los escenarios más grandes. Abriendo con "The Reckoning", la banda rápidamente mostró todo el poder de su metal sinfónico y también las partes climáticas donde la voz de Sharon Den Adel realmente brilló. A pesar de que estábamos cansados, disfrutamos mucho del espectáculo con temas como "Faster", "Stand my ground", "Supernova", "All I need". El final del espectáculo contó con la versión acústica de "Never-Ending Story" y el clásico de todos los tiempos de la banda "Mother Earth".
DOMINGO 28 DE ABRIL
Empezamos el tercer día en el Sun Stage para ver a TORTURE SQUAD una de mis bandas brasileñas favoritas. Y sabiendo que habría una gran sorpresa en su show. Empezando con "Hell is Coming", "Buried Alive" y "Hellbound" la banda sonó compacta y realmente brutal. La voz de Mayara Puerta fue increíble y el sonido de la guitarra fue enorme. Leather Leone y Vinnie Tex "For Those who dare" y "Warrior". Terminamos con "Chaos Corporation"
WHILE SHE SLEEPS le dio al festival una dosis de metalcore. La banda tiene un sonido muy moderno, mezclando grandes riffs de guitarra con melodías vocales. Temas como "Sleeps Society", "Anti-social", "Self Hell" y "Silence Speaks" fueron entregados a un público que disfrutó de su set. Terminan con "Systematic"
Luego llegaron los maestros del thrash OVERKILL con un cambio de formación ya que el bajista DD Verni no pudo estar en la gira latinoamericana. Como bajista invitado la banda trajo al ex bajista de Megadeth Dave Ellefson. Abriendo con "Scorched" la banda pronto comenzó con sus clásicos como "Bring me the night", "Hello from the gutter", "Ironbound", "Elimination", "Rotten to the Core": Esto fue como una fiesta de thrash. Pero todo tiene que llegar a su fin y la banda se despidió con el cover de "Fuck You".
AVATAR fue una de las bandas más esperadas del día. Muchos fans lucieron el maquillaje de su frontman Johannes Eckerström. "Dance Devil Dance", "The Eagle has landed", "Valley of Disease", "Tower" (con Johannes solo con un pequeño piano) fueron interpretadas frente a un público que enloqueció. El show terminó con "Smells like a freakshow" y "Hail the apocalypse".
CARCASS fue otro de los grandes del día. Arrancando con "Buried Dreams" la banda calentó la tarde que ya tenía 35 grados. El frontman Jeff Walker no se encontraba muy bien y en muchas partes del show tuvieron que ayudarlo con agua y hielo. "Kelly´s Meat Emporium", "Incarnated Solvent Abuse", "This mortal Coil", "Corporal JIgsore Quandary" nos hicieron hacer mosh y headbang. El final con "Ruptured in Purulence / Heartwork" y "Tools of the Trade" nos dejó con ganas de seguir viéndolos.
Este fue un set especial de los todopoderosos ANTHRAX. Con Frank Bello fuera de gira por Latinoamérica tuvimos el placer de ver a la banda con Dan Lilker al bajo. Una formación única en la vida. Y la banda interpretó todos sus clásicos, desde “Among the Living”, “Caught in a Mosh”, “Madhouse”, “Metal Thrashing Mad”, “I am the Law” con Andreas Kisser en la guitarra hasta “Medusa”, “Got the Time”, “A.I.R.” y “Indians”. ¡¡¡Fiesta pura!!!
Finalmente una de mis bandas favoritas de todos los tiempos en la Tierra: MERCYFUL FATE. Con la incorporación de Becky Baldwin al bajo como miembro de tiempo completo, este fue un espectáculo espectacular. King Diamond sonó realmente bien, comenzando con el clásico de todos los tiempos “The Oath”. La sección rítmica y las guitarras fueron increíbles en “A Corpse Without a Soul”, el nuevo tema “The jackal of salzburg” y obviamente en “Curse of the Paraohs”, “A Dangerous Meeting”, “Doomed by the living dead”. El final fue con “Come to the Sabbath” pero la banda regresó para un bis con “Satan´s Fall”. Maravilloso.
Nuestra segunda experiencia en el Summer Breeze Brasil fue realmente fantástica y tuvimos la oportunidad de ver muchas grandes bandas en un festival realmente profesional y que no tiene nada que envidiar a los europeos.

The second edition of the Summer Breeze Brasil took place from April 26th to April 28th, 2024 in Sao Paulo in the same place where the first edition took place, that is the huge Memorial de America Latina which is in the Barra Funda neighbourhood. The place is like a big park with two big parts that are communicated through a big bridge (prepare your legs to go up and down this bridge). It has really good transportation because is located close to the Barra Funda train station and there is also a good service of buses connecting with the rest of Sao Paulo.
I have to say that the organization was really good, even better than in the first edition of the festival. This time there was a small change in the stages. There were still the two big ones (Hot Stage and Ice Stage) in one part of the Memorial, the one crossing the bridge (Sun Stage) and the fourth one (Waves Stage) was moved from inside the Memorial to the open air, close to the merchandise places and the horror museum. As we said last year, the Brazilian edition has nothing to envy to the biggest festivals in Europe.
THE ACTION: FRIDAY APRIL 26th
What a dilemma: how to choose the bands to see: should we watch full shows or should we see a couple of songs from each band in order to see them all? We decided to do a mix. The first band that graced our ears was NESTOR. With their eighties melodic metal feeling the band took the stage with "Kids in a Ghost Town" with a crystal clear sound. Despite not having a big discography Nestor was formed in 1989 and then reformed in 2021. The band delivered tracks like "1989" or "Signed in blood" with precise execution.
We remained in the big stages area to watch the powerful FLOTSAM & JETSAM. It was great to see these guys: they are a thrah legend and they have the addition of Ken Mary (Chastain, Fifth Angel and many more) on drums since 2019. The band started the show at full speed with the classic "Hammerhead" from their debut album. And sure this was a show for pure headbanging. The second track was another classic: "Desecrator" and the audience enjoyed the first mosphit of the festival. The band combined their older material such as "No PLace for Disgrace" with newer tracks like "Brace for Impact" or "Prisoner of Time". A crushing show.
Then came EDU FALASCHI with all his heavy power metal combining tracks from his solo career with Angra classics. The band sounded really tight and what can we say about Edu´s vocals, they are flawless. He sounded really well despite the sun and the heat that was starting to be tough at 1 p.m.
We crossed the bridge to see some songs from Brazilian horrr metal band ALCHEMIA. Their music is powerful yet melodic and their image can be described as closer to black metal with corpse paint. Interesting tracks like the opening "Sacrifice" and "Inception or "Ashes" were really well received by the audience. It was amazing to see this band with the burning sun at 2 p.m.
We walked some meters to watch TYGERS OF PAN TANG in the Sun Stage. This band is a heavy metal legend and they have plenty of music to deliver in one show. Since 2020 the band features the great Italian guitarist Francesco Marras that gives a modern touch to the band´s sound. Classics like "Spellbound" from the John Sykes era, the opening "Gangland" or "Suzie smiled" from their "Wild Cat" album, were delivered along with the newer tracks like "Fire on the Horizon" and "Back for Good". A really good heavy metal show with nostalgic moments.
Crossing the bridge we foun the thrash metal machine EXODUS. Opening with their all time classic "Bonded by Blood" the band showed no mercy, mixing their more recent anthems like "Blood In, Blood Out" or "Prescribing Horror" with their early 2000 stuff like "Blacklist" and their early classics like "And Then There Were None", "A Lesson in Violence" and "Piranha". The band sounds really tight and is great to see Tom Hunting live after his health problems. The show ended with the moshpit duo of "The Toxic Waltz" and "Strike of the Beast".
In 2023 we saw SKID ROW at the Summer BReeze Brasil festival. Now was the time of their former singer SEBASTIAN BACH.The show featured 12 Skid Row songs, 2 covers, one of Rush´s "Tom Sawyer" and "American Metalhead" by Painmuseum, and 3 Sebastian tunes. The show was nostalgic yet powerful, and Sebastian is still one hell of a showman. One thing that is needed in Sebastian´s band is another guitar. That is especially evident when comparing Skid Row´s show in the 2023 Summer Breeze Brasil with this show. Clearly tracks like "Youth Gone Wild", "Piece of Me" or "Slave to the Grind" would sound better with the addition of another guitar.
Then it was the turn of MR BIG, the band featuring Billy Sheehan on bass and Paul Gilbert on guitar. Opening with "Addicted to That Rush" was a good choice because is a powerful tune with good melodies and solos. The show gave me the sensation that I feel with many of the Mr. BIg albums: love the more rocking tunes but I don´t really enjoy the ballads. The show had a little bit of a slow down with the segment that went from "Just Take my Heart" to the Cat Stevens cover "Wild World" (with their sugar ballad "To be with you" in the middle of this part of the show). Other tunes like "Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy", "Alive and Kickin´" or "Lean into It" made the show more enjoyable for the public.
Then came GENE SIMMONS with a lovely show. Mixing Kiss classics with some covers like Motorheads´ "Ace of Spades" or Led Zeppelin´s "Communication Breakdown" and a song from Gene´s solo career, "Are You ready". The band plays Kiss songs that are originally sang by Paul Stanley, so it is really good to see that Gene leaves space for the other musicians to be in the front, letting the guitarist sing Paul´s tunes while Gene plays bass. The end of the show was obviously with "I was made for loving you" and "Rock´n´roll all night" finishing this pure party.
Finally we crossed the bridge one last time on this day in order to watch BIOHAZARD. We wanted to watch the band now that Evan Seinfeld is back on bass and vocals. The show opening was really good with "Urban Discipline" and "Shades of Grey", followed by classics like "Tales from the Hard Side" and "Wrong Side of the Tracks". Also "Five blocks to the subway" and "Down for Life" made the audience mosh and headbang. The band sounds very powerful as always and Evan´s voice with its unique tone is still in really good form. The end with "Punishment" and "Hold My Own" made us go back to the hotel headbanging ready for the next day.
SATURDAY APRIL 27th
We were waiting to see NERVOSA again with their new line-up and it was a surprise to see them with the light of day. This time Helena Kotina switched from bass to guitar (compared to the 2022 show), and we have Hel Pyre on bass and the newest member, Gabriela Abud on drums. After a brief intro came "Seed of Death" with all the power that this band can unleash. Despite some sound problems, especially on Prika´s guitar (she sang some songs without the guitar), the band delivered a crushing show, including guest vocals by Torture Squad´s Mayara Puertas.
The energy didn´t stop as FORBIDDEN took the stage. we were curious to see how new vocalist Norman Skinner would manage to nail Russ Anderson´s classics. And he sure did it. And also to see live that monster behind the drums called Chris Kontos. It was a really powerful and enjoyable show with classics like "Twisted into Form", "Forbidden Evil" and "Step by Step". All good things have to end, so the band said goodbye with their ultimate classic, "Chalice of Blood"
Walking just some steps to the other stage, we watched GAMMA RAY with their heavy power metal show full of melodies and catchy choruses. "Land of the Free", "Master of Confusion", "Heaven Can Wait" and "Somewhere Out in Space" are just some of the songs that were played here.
Almost at the same time we crossed the bridge to watch KORZUS. Their music is even more powerful live than in their recordings. Especially the classics that are played with a more modern guitars and drums sound to fit well the newer stuff. "Discipline of Hate", "Mass Illusion", "Pay for your lies" and "Agony" were delivered with crushing guitars and the unique voice of Marcello Pompeu, the alma mater of the band.
With almost 35 degrees ANGRA took the stage with a show that combined their melodies with powerful riffs and the intrincated arrangements that are the band´s trademark. Fabio Lione´s voice is in reallyn good shape, even with the heat that he had to stand during the show. Rafael Bittencourt is the only original member in this line-up but he has managed to work really well with th other guitarist, Marcelo Barbosa, who has almost one decade in Angra. A combination of really old tracks with newer ones are the core of the show: "Angels Cry", "Rebirth", "Time", "Vida Seca". And the end with "Carry On" and "Nova era" left us wanting more
Opening with "Blood, Tears, Dust" LACUNA COIL took the stage when the sun was still high. Cristina Scabbia is a really good frontwoman and it amazed me that the band played a lot of tunes (I don´t know if they aren´t the band that played the highest number of songs in the festival). The band had a really good sound and they delivered tracks like "Heaven´s a Lie", "My demon", "Sword of Anger" and the Depeche Mode cover "Enjoy the Silence". ONe of the best shows of the festival.
Then came HAMMERFALL with all their heavy metal with a huge sound, especially on drums and guitars. Joacim Cans had a really good night and he got a good response from the audience. Opening with "Heeding the Call", the band deliver heavy metal anthem after heavy metal anthem. Tracks like "Renegade", "Hail to the King", "Last Man Standing and the closer "Hearts on Fire" were the top of the band´s show.
We reamined in our place to watch EPICA, a band that combines energetic tunes with climatic parts and amazing vocals contrast. Simone Simons is a great frontwoman and is an essential part of the band as is also Mark Jansen with his guitar and the growling vocals. "Sensorium", "Unleashed", "The Skeleton Key", "Storm the Sorrow" (with Cristina Scabbia) were delivered on Brazilian ground. The end was with one of my favorites, "Beyond the Matrix", and "Consign to Oblivion"
With some pain in our legs we crossed the bridge to watch JEFF SCOTT SOTO. The charismatic former Yngwie Malmsteen and countless other bands singer delivered a show that combined songs from many parts of his career, mainly Yngwie, Talisman and W.E.T. Tracks like "Now your ships are burned", "Caught in the middle" ,"I am a viking", "I´ll see the light tonight" got a really big response from the audience. Also the Talisman tracks like "Blissful garden"; "Time after Time" and the W.E.T. ones, "The Call of the Wild" and "Comes down like rain". As a surprise HAMMERFALL guitarist (and also Talisman guitarist) Pontus Norgren took the stage to deliver some tracks like "Break your chains", "Give me a sign", "Just between us" and more.
Finally we watched WITHIN TEMPTATION in one of the bigger stages. Opening with "The Reckoning" the band fastly showed all the power of their symphonic metal and also the climatic parts where Sharon Den Adel´s voice really shine. Despite that we were tired we really enjoyed the show with tracks like "Faster", "Stand my ground", "Supernova", "All I need". The end of the show featured the acoustic version of "Never-Ending Story" and the band´s all time classic "Mother Earth".
SUNDAY APRIL 28th
We started the third day on the Sun Stage to watch TORTURE SQUAD one of my favorite Brazilian bands. And knowing that there would be a big surprise in their show. Kicking off with "Hell is Coming", "Buried Alive" and "Hellbound" the band sounded tight and really brutal. Mayara Puerta´s vocals were amazing and the guitar sound was huge. Leather Leone and Vinnie Tex "For Those who dare" and "Warrior". End with "Chaos Corporation"
WHILE SHE SLEEPS gave the festival a dose of metalcore. The band has a really modern sound, mixing big guitar riffs with vocal melodies. Tracks like "Sleeps Society", "Anti-social", "Self Hell" and "Silence Speaks" where delivered to an audience that enjoyed their set. End with "Systematic
Then came the thrash masters OVERKILL with a change in line-up since bassist DD Verni could not be in the Latin American tour. As guest bassist the band brought former Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson. Opening with "Scorched" the band soon started with their classics like "Bring me the night", "Hello from the gutter", "Ironbound", "Elimination", "Rotten to the Core": This was like a thrash party. But everything has to come to an end and the band said good bye with the "Fuck You" cover.
AVATAR was one of the most awaited bands of the day. Many fans were wearing the make up of their frontman Johannes Eckerström. "Dance Devil Dance", "The Eagle has landed", "Valley of Disease", "Tower" (with Johannes alone with small piano) were delivered in front of an audience that went crazy. The show ended with "Smells like a freakshow" and "Hail the apocalypse".
CARCASS was another of the big ones of the day. Kicking off with "Buried Dreams" the band heated the already 35 degrees afternoon. Frontman Jeff Walker was not feeling really well and in many parts of the show he had to be helped with water and ice. "Kelly´s Meat Emporium", "Incarnated Solvent Abuse", "This mortal Coil", "Corporal JIgsore Quandary" made us mosh and headbang. The end with "Ruptured in Purulence / Heartwork" and "Tools of the Trade" left us wanting to continue watching them
This was a special set by the almightyANTHRAX. With Frank Bello out for the Latin America tour we had the pleasure of watching the band with Dan Lilker on bass. A once of a lifetime line-up. And the band delivered all their classics from "Among the Living", "Caught in a Mosh", "Madhouse", "Metal Thrashing Mad", "I am the Law" with Andreas Kisser on guitar to "Medusa", "Got the Time", "A.I.R." and "Indians". Pure party !!!
Finally one of my all time favorite bands on Earth: MERCYFUL FATE. With the addition of Becky Baldwin on bass as a full time member this was one hell of a show. King Diamond sounded really well, starting with the all time classic "The Oath". The rhythm section and the guitars were amazing on "A Corpse Without a Soul", the new track "The jackal of salzburg" and obviously in "Curse of the Paraohs", "A Dangerous Meeting", "Doomed by the living dead". The end was with "Come to the Sabbath" but the band returned for an encore with "Satan´s Fall". Wonderful.
Our second experience in the Summer Breeze Brasil was really fantastic and we had the opportunity to watch many great bands in a festival that is really professional and that has nothing to envy to the European ones.
