"World of Sorrows" is 5 tracks and 30+ minutes of pure brutal melodic death metal. It is focused with laser precision upon a singular musical idea and goal: to create melodic death metal with a higher emphasis on the traditional death metal elements often neglected by so called melodic “death metal” bands, like blasting drums, lower vocals, and percussive & low morbid tremolo riffs, inspired by bands like ROTTING CHRIST, INTESTINE BAALISM, MI’GAUSS, MOLESTED, VEHEMENCE, EUCHARIST, and SADISTIC INTENT, as well as the earliest works of AMON AMARTH and KATAKLYSM. This disk is 30+ minutes of pure old-school, anti-trend, melodic death metal savagery sure to please any fan of the aforementioned bands.

Old school stalwarts CRAVEN IDOL celebrate their 15th anniversary with third opus Forked Tongues. Swearing by the gods of old, the North London veterans further hone their unique blend of old school extreme metal.

Dark Descent Records will release Forked Tongues on CD, vinyl, cassette and digital formats on July 23.

“After spending a month on the road with Mystifer, we are a closer-knit unit than ever before. There’s a good reason for this being the longest standing line-up in our fifteen-year existence. The entire band lived and breathed this record in the months preceding the studio, and the performances delivered by each member are testament to their dedication to untarnished extreme metal of old,” says founding member Sadistik Wrath. “'Forked Tongues' is a vicious and concerted tribute to folly of mankind. In these godless days of Sodom, craven idols are in their element, wheeling and dealing, beckoning you to follow their treacherous causes. The apocalyptic legends of ancient Greece read like unholy divination… and it is from them that we drew the subject matter for the record.”

Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Tom Dring at Southport’s Vagrant Recordings, Forked Tongues showcases a rawer side of CRAVEN IDOL, aiming to bottle the band’s live ferocity.

Shunning the trends and genre-specifications poisoning the scene, CRAVEN IDOL pay homage to a wide variety of bands, including Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Master’s Hammer, Manilla Road, Gospel Of The Horns, Sodom, Satan, Poison (Ger), Candlemass, Mystifier, Cirith Ungol, and Absu, to name just a few.

The album takes on the anomalous tale of the serpentine beast Typhon, the fiercest of all Titans in Greek Mythology. The ‘Father of Monsters’ is said to have challenged Zeus to do battle for cosmic supremacy, ultimately succumbing to the Olympian’s might, and facing imprisonment beneath Mount Aetna. According to legend, the sporadic eruptions of the volcano are due to the enduring wrath of Typhon.

Instead of merely reciting an ancient myth, FORKED TONGUES acts as sequel to the original tale, with Typhon returning to settle old scores. The power of the Olympians has waned over millennia, with their ambitions tamed by excess and indulgence. Meanwhile, the misguided worship of a fictitious Golden Age has facilitated Typhon’s escape. A corpulent Zeus now faces the hundred-headed monstrosity once again.

Forked Tongues is a cautionary tale, warning of all craven idols.

The monumental artwork, courtesy of master painter Eliran Kantor (Sodom, Incantation, Testament, Atheist) displays a scene of our world on the brink of total devastation.

“Peculiarly enough, the original front cover concept was inspired by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, more specifically the woodblock print (Ukiyo-e) ‘The Dragon of Smoke Escaping From Mount Fuji’. Completed 1849, the work is through to have been one of Hokusai’s last.

In Kantor’s piece, Shizuoka is replaced by Sicily, Fuji by Aetna, and the dragon by Typhon. The back cover also loosely pays homage to ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa.'"

Dissonant black metal entity Norse have forged a unique sound over the years playing intense, bleak and somewhat futuristic music which they’ve only honed with each subsequent album. They play calculated, atonal yet highly rhythmic music delivered with machine-like precision which sounds markedly different and refreshing when most black metal bands are too reliant on their progenitors for laying down the framework. Never does it seem as though they’ve lost their way delving deep into the dissonant territories; Norse have a predefined trajectory even with its myriad variations and undulations. They adhere to their mutated sound which is awash with harsh, venomous vocals, adding character to the otherworldly mechanised riffing and unrelenting spasmodic waves of blasting. This long-running Australian band have created singular music that not only defies the trends but also holds its own alongside that of other similar-minded contemporaries on the label such as Replicant, Veilburner and Crypts of Despair.

Eccentric Norwegian death metal band Diskord have made quite a reputation for themselves over the years for playing some twisted, unhinged death metal that takes the best elements of old school death metal, dissonant death metal, technical death metal, even progressive and jazz music, and then some. Their death metal is wonderfully concocted, full of unpredictable twists and turns, while retaining ample causticity and drive throughout. There's just so much happening at all times, it's both mind-boggling and exhilarating as one attempts to decipher it all over the course of several listens - it's impossible to fully wrap your head around this fascinating beast of an album at one go. Mixed and mastered by Colin Marston of Gorguts fame, the clarity of the myriad instrumentation that includes electric upright bass, theremin, cello among the regular ones is highlighted, with the album once again receiving a gloriously abstract painting by Sindre Foss Skancke. Seven years in the making, 'Degenerations', in addition to being a virtually perfect death metal album, is also one of the most exciting albums to come out in recent times, one that doesn't conform to the standard template of death metal music and strives to create something altogether refreshing and unrestrained.

Death metal band Fetid Zombie is the brainchild of the legendary artist Mark Riddick. An unstoppable force in the underground, Riddick has put out dozens of releases, mostly splits with bands from around the world, in addition to releasing six full length albums. It's been five years since the release of his last full length 'Epicedia' which came out on the same label, and now Riddick has once again teamed up with some extremely talented musicians to fulfill his vision of dark and atmospheric death metal that is rooted in the classic heavy metal sound. Contrary to the one-dimensional and predictable songwriting of most of the current bands, Fetid Zombie's songs are impeccably structured, with there being excellent contrasting passages, be it melodic flashes or slower, heavier hooks, flurry of leads or just some transcendental atmospheric part, all of which work beautifully against the backdrop of deep, guttural growls and stellar death metal riffing. This is a passionate and memorable death metal album that pushes the boundaries of the rigid genre in its own way, and it's one you'll keep coming back to because of its timeless value and flawless execution.

Veilburner are back with a new album full of twisted, brain-warping, consciousness-altering death/black metal. Many thought they'd achieved their pinnacle with their previous full length 'A Sire to the Ghouls of Lunacy' but this one, while continuing where it left off, expands upon the theme of that one in ways never imagined. This is more of the same unhinged, dissonant and downright terrifying music delivered with even more conviction and extremity. Their creative genius is inexhaustible as the band once again elaborates on the concept of the man suffering from a mental condition being haunted by the ghoul-ish entities that feature on the artwork and fighting to prove their existence. Indeed, the multi-faceted music sounds as though it's written by someone with multiple personality disorder because it's fantastically whimsical, following no perceivable trajectories, and just leaves you shocked and spellbound by it all. It's the next level in extreme metal music, blurring boundaries of death and black metal and everything in between, and elevating it to heights hitherto unscaled.
