PRESS RELEASE:
Obscura Qalma
Apotheosis
Rising Nemesis Records
12 November 2021
Recent Rising Nemesis Records signees Obscura Qalma are excited to announce their upcoming debut album, Apotheosis. Set for release on November 12th via Rising Nemesis Records.
Active since 2018, Venice, Italy natives Obscura Qalma formed from connections built in their local scene while performing within their prior projects. Upon forming, the band immediately began playing live and released their first effort, an EP in 2019 entitled From the Sheol to the Apeiron. Self-described as "blackened heavily orchestrated death metal" that is "influenced by Behemoth and Septicflesh", Obscura Qalma also incorporates influences from Death, Dissection, Hypocrisy, and classical/film score music among others to create epic and dark death metal that exists in its own philosophically inspired realm. From a lyrical and thematic angle, Apotheosis draws additional fire and fuel from the likes of Nietzsche, Freud, and additional modern astrophysical theories according to the band.
The end result on Apotheosis may draw comparisons to some of their fellow peers who have helped create the renowned symphonic death metal wave within Italy, but the music itself here carves out a path that is purely their own. Obscura Qalma comments, "From the nihilistic foundations of European culture and epistemological solipsism to astrophysics and psychoanalysis, ‘Apotheosis' dwells on the limits of human knowledge and the impassable boundaries of its own existence."
Devotion to bleakness takes many forms in metal music, and in spite of the possibility of jumping the shark when it is done without passion, a passionate take such as that which is delivered on Apotheosis carries its own weight and worth. This release sees Obscura Qalma's intense and mercurial dissection of varied musical and literary influences fused together into a new path that defies conventional norms.
Obscura Qalma - Apotheosis band statement
"Inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud, as well as by contemporary figures such as Massimo Recalcati and James Owen Weatherall, Apotheosis (from the Greek meaning, "To Deify") explores human existence in an epistemological solipsistic view. Elevated to divine status, from a higher point we can look at the external world as an unresolvable question rather than actually false.
Musically, the album is inspired by Dissection, Emperor and Death as well as by classical music and film composers such as Alexandre Desplat."
