SATAN ANNOUNCE "EARTH INFERNAL"

PRESS RELEASE:

NWOBHM veterans SATAN are set to release their sixth studio album, Earth Infernal, via Metal Blade Records on April 1, 2022. Today, the band unleash "Burning Portrait," the first video off the album. Pre-Orders for Earth Infernal are available now in the following formats and can be ordered here: metalblade.com/satan

• Special Edition LP housed in a slipcase (w/ hot foil embossing) incl. slipmat, patch and huge die-cut sticker (EU excl.)

• ochre brown marbled vinyl (EU excl., ltd. 200)

• clear slate grey marbled vinyl (Metal Blade Shop excl., ltd. 200)

• dark goldenrod marbled vinyl (Bandcamp excl., ltd. 200)

"'Burning Portrait' describes the fall of this person, the gradual decline of optimism turning into cynicism, and how ideals, like paint on a picture, can crumble and decay if not maintained properly. The fall happens in his own mind rather than in the real world. He can no longer visualize himself the way he used to and realizes he has turned into the sum of everything he despised as a young idealist," explains guitarist Russ Tippins.

Earth Infernal is a product of the times that birthed it, and could only be the work of SATAN. Having churned out cutting edge heavy metal throughout the 80s - and reunited in 2011 - their sixth full-length maintains the high standard they long ago set, and it is perhaps their timeliest release. "For two years the world has been preoccupied with politics and pandemics and while we were all looking the other way our planet has continued to get hotter," says guitarist Russ Tippins. "Our Earth is now infernally hot. Almost irreversibly so. We are on a one-way trip to Hell and dragging our children along with us. Yes, SATAN has something to say about global warming."

Following up 2018's stunning Cruel Magic is no mean feat, a record that Tippins views as a 'game changer' for SATAN. "It feels like we jumped up a level or two. As if everything we'd worked towards since the reunion had suddenly clicked into place."

Over three years of development went into Earth Infernal, describing the record succinctly as 'brutal, up tempo, loud guitars', it is classic SATAN but sounds fresh and new, the band experimenting a little. "Steve (Ramsey, guitar) and I had been talking for a while about playing some of our dual leads in unison rather than in harmony - which is our normal method. And sure enough, the trusted twin harmonies are still in abundance on this record, but two of the songs have us playing lead in unison, like Rossington and Collins' solo in "Free Bird."

"I believe that our current writing and subject matter are only too relevant to what is going on in the world today," concludes Tippins. With touring plans in the works, SATAN fans will get a chance to hear Earth Infernal live in the not-too-distant future, and perhaps more importantly SATAN will continue to spread the important message at the heart of the album.

Filthy, belligerent and obnoxious, Midnight make music to start fights to. Since 2003, one-man-band Athenar has been churning out an ungodly racket, dropping countless demos, splits and EPs - and in 2022 he returns, delivering a catchy mixture of black metal, speed metal, and dirty punk rock. "I always want it to be loud and nasty," he asserts. "That kinda thing never gets old with me. How funny will that look to see me at age 77 - if I reach that point - sitting on the porch blasting Hellhammer?"

The title is a combination of the song titles "Let There Be Sodomy" and "Szex Witchery", Athenar wanting to maintain the tradition of using six syllables. Lyrically, the record is "unfiltered savage animalisticness", and the deeper the listener delves, the dirtier they get, which is just the way it should be. When it came to tracking the record, Athenar returned to Mercenary Studios in Cleveland, OH and producer Noah Buchanan, who makes it very easy for him to cut loose and make noise, choosing to once again record all the instruments himself despite having a live band that could step in and help out. "It's still just me and my science project gone awry. I realize I'm musically handicapped, but there's a charm to it."

Mulling over the question as to why anyone should actually give a shit about Midnight, he once again comes up with a typically Athenar answer: "If I were to give actual good advice, I would say stay clear of anything to do with Midnight. But I'm not a rational thinker, so as usual, I will give terrible advice and say punish your earholes and play this album as loud as your stereo goes, go out to a gig and mingle with others that you don't know, lick their faces and rub upon each other's sweaty torsos to the hellish, neanderthalish noise of a band called Midnight! You gotta release your demons somehow! That's why you should give a shit, or two."

VAINA RELEASE NEW TRACK "I1"

PRESS RELEASE:

Finnish black metal act VAINA is pleased to announce their upcoming new album "Futue Te Ipsum", due out March 4th 2022 via Aesthetic Death.

The track "I1" is now premiering at Grizzly Butts. Stream it HERE!

"Spiritual transcendental art, karma for the dark subconscious"

Impossible without just listening, but perhaps the best way to try to understand the "Futue Te Ipsum" album, is to travel back a few years...

After VAINA's debut album ("Viisikärki") was released in 2017, the band were invited to undertake a small tour. However, not being entertainers and without any real desire or need to perform they agreed only to doing one gig, which happened to be their first.

Being held the day before Hexennacht and at an unknown anonymous space. It transpired that the so-called venue was a rathole only fit for demolition. The general atmosphere was uncompromising and schizophrenic.... hectic but phlegmatic, communal but unwelcoming. It happened that the music was supposed to be summoned in a small desolate room, containing almost nothing. Hard to tell, at times, if the invitation was really for a fist fight or to play music? Perhaps both.

To mix things up further, instead of replicating the new album – "Viisikärki" – as was expected, we had prepared a set of unrehearsed noise. The strategy was a rough concept and a loose framework to build upon, everything else was totally improvised.

Being properly wasted before the start of the gig, then as things started the bass guitar plug and pedal broke. It was not going to plan. Subsequently, throughout most of the set the bass was being played lay on the "stage"... and once the set concluded the bass was continuously smashed into the floor and walls, in an attempt to get some fitting sound out of it. Even though the bass performance was fairly bittersweet, other parts met with more success. Crude, echoing and space-like guitars blended in with the furious shrieks of our vocalist – it was a triumph of accepting a challenge, overcoming adversity and with the end-result not being as totally fucked up as it might.

Reactions from the audience were diverse. Some really liked the performance (unsure about the music) whilst others totally hated it. The most rewarding feedback was from witnesses (not normally into this kind of music) who felt our show was transcendental, as though they had experienced being transported to some other place or form. Whilst playing the set we had experienced the same. It had become a spiritual experience.

On that night, the mindset and approach for a purposeful and challenging new direction was set for VAINA. There could be no return. It was imperative to continue to follow our intuition, to explore and go further down these unpolluted and unchartered paths.

"Futue Te Ipsum" - shares a similar dystopian vision and atmosphere to what was experienced at that gig. It's pioneering, nihilistic, dualistic, variable, spiritual, uncompromising, controversial...

...untrendy black metal,

like black metal was originally,

and like it should always be.
