SLAUGHTERSUN’s new EP, Black Marrow, pulses with the fierce intensity of a band that has only just begun to stake its claim in the death metal world. Officially formed in 2023 by band leader Ben Karas—known for his work with THANK YOU SCIENTIST and WINDFÆRER—SLAUGHTERSUN unites seasoned musicians to create a sound that’s both brutal and strikingly innovative. The Black Marrow EP, which will be released on January 10th, 2025, is a relentless journey through dark soundscapes and visceral storytelling, refined by a group that is unafraid to push boundaries in an already intense genre.
Composed of their first four singles, the EP brings together the songs that introduced SLAUGHTERSUN’s fierce identity over 2023 and 2024. Each track has been meticulously remixed and remastered, with every detail carefully adjusted to enhance its depth and aggression. The EP opens with "Unearthly Propaganda," a chilling intro that sets the tone, followed by “Fall of the Firmament”—their debut single that catapulted them into the scene with critical acclaim in late 2023. Tracks like “Relentless Thelemic” and “Ready Cell Awaits” carry forward this momentum, plunging listeners into a world of intense riffs and lyrical intensity.
The EP’s closer, “Relentless Thelemic (Frightbox Live Recording),” is a powerful tribute to the closing of Frightbox Recording, the studio where SLAUGHTERSUN recorded this track live, marking the end of an era for the iconic Passaic, NJ, studio. This final track captures a raw, unfiltered energy that feels both nostalgic and fierce, showing SLAUGHTERSUN’s respect for the spaces and sounds that have influenced their journey.
The EP’s production bears the signature of Karas, who produced, engineered, and mixed it at Frost Gauntlet Recording, with additional engineering by Bobby Torres on the live track. With Ryan Kelly’s expert mastering, the tracks achieve a refined, polished intensity that’s visceral without losing any of its rawness. Artistically, Black Marrow is rounded out by cover art from Curse Of Face and a band logo designed by Michael Gonçalves, with a band photo by Jackie Betancourt that captures the group’s dark and enigmatic presence.
Lyrically, Black Marrow draws its depth from vocalist Justin Hillman, whose lyrics and vocal delivery are infused with both ferocity and emotional range, wrapping around the instrumental passages to create an immersive experience. Hillman’s voice adds a haunting layer, weaving through Karas’ treble strings, Cody Mccorry’s powerful bass lines, and Jason Quinones’ relentless percussive “hammer battalion.” Together, they create a sound that recalls the legacy of death metal legends like GORGUTS, DEATH, CANNIBAL CORPSE, and AT THE GATES, while carving out their own unique path.
The release of Black Marrow is not just a milestone for the band, but a declaration of SLAUGHTERSUN’s arrival on the metal stage. It follows a year of impactful singles and their electrifying live debut at Lucky 13 in Brooklyn, NY. Officially formed in 2023 by band leader Ben Karas (THANK YOU SCIENTIST, WINDFAERER) after years of experimentation; SLAUGHTERSUN is a novel approach to the genre of death metal taking influence from bands such as GORGUTS, DEATH, CANNIBAL CORPSE and AT THE GATES.
