The sky darkens. The wildfires roar. A new album from Krigsgrav emerges from the smoke. Wise Blood welcomes the Texan black metal trio back to the coven to release their new masterpiece of eternally doomed black metal — Fires in the Fall.
Formed in 2004, Krigsgrav approaches two decades as a project co-created by D. Sikora. After releasing The Sundering with Wise Blood in 2021, the members barely breathed before crafting the record’s successor. The resulting songwriting sessions expanded on Krigsgrav’s foundation of brooding black metal and melodic death/doom.
“We wrote Fires in the Fall almost immediately after we completed writing The Sundering, so it almost feels like a double album, but they are very different,” shares J. Coleman. “We intentionally approached writing Fires in the Fall with the idea that it would be more atmospheric, and we would let the music breathe a bit more. That’s why the songs have more of a tempo change than those on The Sundering. With Fires, we wanted everything to be grandiose and bigger, but really emphasize giving each song a haunting feel.”
Krigsgrav incinerate the genre boundaries between downcast doom and razor-riffed black metal. Fire in the Fall appeals to the autumnal heart beating within fans of Agalloch, Mother of Graves, and My Dying Bride alike. Fires in the Fall rages as furiously as anything in Krigsgrav’s stellar discography. Named after a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, it’s a record that illuminates beauty within the world’s darkest shadows.
“In my interpretation, the poem represents the magic in the changing of seasons from Summer to Fall,” Coleman offers. “There is an intangible mystique in the air. It feels like there is something different coming, almost menacing. Taking that basic idea then considered how there are celebrations of Pagan traditions (Samhain/Yule) that were reinterpreted into modern Christian holidays. It seems like we as humans have always found mysticism in those autumn/winter times. “As we are all heavily inspired during those times of year as well, we wanted to create an album with songs that gave off that similar feeling.”
Fires in the Fall will blaze into the world on June 23rd, 2023. Wise Blood Records will release Vinyl, CD, and Cassette formats featuring stunning artwork by Cameron Hinojosa. The CD and Digital versions contain the bonus track "When I'm Gone, Let the Wolves Come."
