Back in 1989, Suffer formed at the dawn of death metal’s Midwestern rise. Teenagers at the time, they were one of the first extreme metal bands in South Dakota. In December, they closed 2023 with their first new music in 8 years. Mere months later, they chase their Gristle, Bruised Spots & Trimmed Fat EP with a brutal and brilliant comeback record, Grand Canvas of the Aesthete.
“This new material is absolute proof that you don't have to “age out” of Death Metal,” comments vocalist/guitarist C.R. Petit. “Suffer was formed in 1989, and 2024 will mark 35 years for us. There is no doubt that this album is the absolute best material we have done together.”
“This is the first Suffer material that was not written by hashing things out in a rehearsal room as a group,” Petit adds. “There was far more scrutiny in riff, structure and transition as well as lyrics and production. We didn't settle for what was close. We all wanted this to surpass everything we have done in the past.”
Suffer’s collision of elevated gore and old school brutality will appeal to fans of Carcass, Asphyx, Exhumed, and Undeath. C.R. Petit and bassist Jason Ellsworth are also both members of Angerot (Redefining Darkness Records) as well as Empty Throne (Wise Blood Records). After releasing outstanding music from both of those bands the last few years, new music from Suffer was hopeful, but never guaranteed.
“To be honest, I really didn't think we would [release another album],” Petit admits. “Most of us have moved on with other bands and projects, family and careers. But, there is something incredibly special to each of us when it comes to Suffer. Something that makes it nearly impossible to just walk away from.”
“Initially, it was preconceived that this was the swan song,” Petit reveals. “We wanted to have one last chance to make a Suffer album that sounded the way every Suffer recording should have sounded. But, this entire process has been absolutely fantastic and I am not sure that we could simply walk away. I am pretty sure that we all have more Suffer in the tank.”

ETERNAL DEATH is proud to present COMPRESS' striking debut mini-album, The Final Level of Consciousness, on cassette tape format.
COMPRESS hail from Massachusetts, and formed in 2022. Later on that year, they released their debut demo, evincing a crustier, almost-blackened hardcore-punk sound. Nevertheless, COMPRESS' roots always laid in black metal, and a strive for a purer but no-less-gutted direction began in earnest. Connor Dooley (Morgirion, Lustrum, Misanthropos) eventually joined on vocals, and work began on the band's debut mini-album.
At last here, COMPRESS' The Final Level of Consciousness crushes forward with the weight of a colossus. Marrying the heft of their debut album - grimy, gutted guitars and drums hit HARD no matter the tempo - with a more pronounced emphasis on atmosphere, COMPRESS' debut mini moves both above and below: straightforward physicality waging war against headier throughlines. In that sense, their moniker is absolutely fitting; deeper listens reveal a respectable / respectful integration of first-wave riffing (and headbanging) that gets twisted and gnarled in unique ways, all without betraying the ethics of black metal. Dooley's vocals alternately howl against the storm and succumb to its sheer force, rising above as well as melding into their molten CRUSH.
Those who claim that black metal is far too often lacking in palpable "heaviness" are encouraged to submit to the onslaught of The Final Level of Consciousness. COMPRESS will perform a tape-release gig on March 15th with Anthropophagous, I Destroyer, and lablemates RITUAL CLEARING in western Massachusetts.

The band was created by a group of five friends who wanted to bring back the old-school metal sound of the 70s and 80s, which was lacking in the music scene at that time. Since then, they have performed countless shows in Mexico and have toured and played at festivals in countries like the USA, Canada, Colombia, Chile, Sweden, and Spain. With their strongest lineup yet, composed of Jerry Aguirre on vocals, Hector Vera on bass and keys, Diego Magdaleno and Victor Segura on guitars, and Andy Rios on drums, Voltax continues to deliver their signature heavy metal sound. The group was founded in October 2018 initially with three elements, Andrea Laganà (Guitar), Daniele Russo (Vocals) and Giacomo Cannici (Drums).
In February 2019 the project officially started with the inclusion of two new members, Davide Nobile (Bass) and Massimo Guercio (Guitar). From the first ideas a common path was undertaken, determined by detailed characteristics including the continuous variations in tempo and the use of apparently similar nuances in the Riffs. Due to a series of factors, the group returns to the formation that founded the project, defining other compositions for a total of eight.
In October 2021 the band begins the recording sessions of what will become, in 2023, the album containing the work previously carried out entitled EVOLUTION OF THE JOURNEY. Currently the lineup is made up of Andrea Laganà (Guitar), Giacomo Cannici (Drums), Daniele Russo (Vocals), Antonio Collerà (Bass) and Vincenzo Ciolino (Guitar)

Tennessee based melodic black metal outfit Lenax is a band on the rise. Their latest opus, Purity, hit streaming services this week to rave reviews and ever increasing plays. With strains reminiscent of classic Immortal, Dark Funeral or Enslaved, the band has stayed true to their influences while creating something new that hooks the listener immediately. Formed in November 2022 as a solo project by guitarist and vocalist Venomous, his previous single release for Shrouded Sight, firmly placed him in the spotlight. Lovecraft inspired lyrics set the stage for a concept that encompassed not only the storytelling aspect of traditional black metal, but also allowed for growth in the way many black metal bands have done over the years with broader content and experimentation. “One of the things that draws people to Lovecraft is the world building.
The looming sense of danger and madness written into his stories creates an internal mythology. The telling and re-framing of stories over generations is how heroes, myths, and religions are formed. When looking for concepts to write occult themed music, you can involve the pantheon created by Lovecraft with a certain amount of freedom. In other words you don’t have to acknowledge a religious worldview first in order to rebel against it,” he said. Over the past year, Lenax evolved into a full band to enable Venomous to perform live, something he has missed doing and he wants to bring the music to the metal community. Currently consisting of Venomous on Guitar and lead vocals, the band also boasts the addition of established Blood Stained Dusk drummer Profana to the fold. Bass is covered by The Silence and the band is working on a new stage show that is sure to be bold and imaginative.
However, bass tracks on the release are covered by Hephaestus and his ancient Hellenic rendition of the Headless Rite from the Greek Magical Papyri gives you a glimpse into the grimoire of magical practitioners the world over. “Originally my idea was much simpler. I thought I might just partner up with a local band, put together one show, and call a bucket list item complete. I do really miss playing live, and by the time I got to the point of adding members, I had the itch to play in front of people. Adding members brought fresh perspectives, enhanced creativity, and gave depth to our sound. Plus, having bandmates who are family members creates a deeper bond and understanding,” he said. In the past months the band has been covered by domestic and foreign press with features in Metalized, Rock Hard and others; and a blistering new review of the from The Metalverse sets the tone for future reviews with the statement “Lenax does an excellent job of blending melody and black metal's heavy sound together in a package that creates an attractive yet fiercely powerful soundscape.”
