A WORD FROM CSW - HISTORY OF THE SLIME

If you are reading this right now, that means you purchased this record. That means you actually like PxCxS. And that means I have to thank you, listener.

Yes, I know it sounds like another one of those "thank you fans we wouldn't exist without you yadda yadda" bullshit that is the usual for bands with success. But hey, this is a goregrind band, a goregrind record, the mere concept of success as it is heard in other genres doesn't exist. It's not some PR shitshow : I am genuinely thankful to each and everyone who ever listened, supported, downloaded, uploaded or even covered PxCxS. The Slime only exists because of you. Because this project has been an accident from the start.

PCS was never really formed. I never thought "hey, I'll make a goregrind band that sounds like Exulceration" and just did it. It was an accident. In January 2013, when FILTH was recorded, I was in the middle of studying at the university of Lyon, trying to get a Masters degree in Music applied to visual arts (film / game music), and I had all but given up on ever playing grindcore since the demise of my old band. My interest in goregrind was at its highest though, thanks to that new wave of mincegore bands that was appearing at the time (HYPEREMESIS, BIRTH, MEATAL ULCER, ONIKU, G.O.D and the likes) ; and I was mainly listening to that when I wasn't working. I had been blown away by the BIRTH / HYPEREMESIS split which remains one of my favourite releases ever, and I was obssessed.

So to kill time between finals, I decided to test a microphone I had just bought, and the quickest / easiest way to do that was to record the simplest thing I knew about : goregrind, the way I like. That's basically how FILTH was made. I wanted to test a microphone, and did the thing in 3 hours. It wasn't supposed to be a band, a concept, something I'd pursue, it was gear testing.

I released the stuff online because I was pretty happy with it and wanted to share it with my friends. That was it. Nothing was really thought of upfront. The style, the names, the song titles, I was just staying in my comfort zone. The name PULSATING CEREBRAL SLIME was chosen simply because my copy of XYSMA's "Swarming Of The Maggots" was the closest thing within my reach and it was the first track listed on here.

The response was as surprising as it was overwhelming. With a push from some key people in the scene, FILTH exploded and I was suddenly bombarded with praise and propositions of releases and splits and trades and many many more stuff. Formally releasing FILTH on physical format was tempting, but it wasn't until Pierre from BRAINDEAD ZINE / BLUE HOLOCAUST and now VOMI NOIR drew a logo for the project that I really decided to take it seriously. Adam from ANAL BIRTH / STENCH OF CARNAGE reached out to do a proper tape release, and it was official. I did some CD-rs myself too, but those didn't get spread much around because I was either too busy or too sick to handle it (I suffer from BPD).

I really became serious about PxCxS after the split with HYPEREMESIS, CHAINSAWS. This split was a small achievement for me ; HYPEREMESIS was the band that had rekindled my interest for goregrind and I was stoked to release sometehing with Andy's project. I spent much more time on CHAINSAWS that I spent for FILTH. Months to write and record. And I still consider it PxCxS' best release. And it sold out in mere hours.

Even for such a limited release, it blew my mind that it was possible. That there were people out there who liked my small goregrind shit, where I'm just basically trying to play what I'd like to hear (.ie more EXULCERATION). I would never have thought that something born of boredom and accident could actually be liked and praised. That was it : PxCxS was now my band, not just a fluke. Just because people out there, the faceless mass of goregrind fans, were asking for more of it.

So again, thank you, listener. Thank you for making this possible. Thank you for turning this accident into one of the happiest accidents of my musical career. This discography is here for you, a proper big release of everything PxCxS ever made, some of it for the first time in physical format, almost all of them for the first time on CD, and everything remastered to cover the fact that I'm a shitty sound engineer. This discography also marks the official end of an era : PULSATING CEREBRAL SLIME is now a full-fledged band, with a solid line-up, and we'll be hitting as many stages as possible. Again, this is because you, listener, made this possible. Because in the five years of PxCxS' existence, you've been here and never gave up on liking the Slime, even and especially when I was going through some personal tragedies and the daily shit of borderline personality disorder. I never gave up on PxCxS because you never gave up on it.

Thank you.

The Slime Never Dies.

CREDITS

ALL TRACKS REMASTERED BY CSW AT STENCH OF BURNING DEATH STUDIOS - 2018

EXCEPT TRACKS 44 - 49

FILTH (Tracks 1 - 8)

Originally self-released (cd-r) and by Stench Of Carnage Tapes

All instruments by CSW

Logo by Pierre De Palmas

Cover art stolen from Gore Shriek / Bruce Spaulding Fuller.

FILTH... This is where everything started. Like I said in the liner notes, I just wanted to test a new microphone, and I recorded goregrind songs for this. There wasn't any thinking before this, this is all raw, straight to the point songwriting. There was no concept, there are no lyrics, there wasn't anything behind it, just gear testing and an urge to make goregrind. Just like the name PULSATING CEREBRAL SLIME is a lazy nod to XYSMA, the song titles are nods to what inspired them. Olfaction and Repugnance is a nod to PUNGENT STENCH, Tumours Cancers Cells Malignancy is a nod to MALIGNANT TUMOUR, Oni Attack refers to S.O.B ("Oni" meaning demon in japanese), and of course And Ulceration Began is a direct tribute to EXULCERATION. Only Filth and Doom aren't refering to anything... Except maybe the video game DOOM which I'm pretty obssessed with (the original one !). FILTH was written, recorded and mixed in 3 hours.

The cover art is a reference to my favourite horror comic book, GORE SHRIEK, and is a panel taken from the first issue (a story of a flesh eating parasite by BRUCE SPAULDING FULLER, an incredible artist). I always loved horror comic book art and even had a death metal band based around this concept (COFFIN TERROR), so it felt natural for me to pay tribute to this with PxCxS. By accident also, this cover became the blueprint for all my other covers, the comic book style, B&W panels on a white background.

CHAINSAWS (Tracks 9 - 12)

Originally released by Goatgrind Records

All instruments by CSW

Recorded at Stench Of Burning Death Studios, 2013

Cover art by Pierre De Palmas

CHAINSAWS ! This is where I get serious. I still think this is the best release of PxCxS, and Sadist With A Chainsaw, the best song I ever wrote. I'm building on the influence of EXULCERATION and XYSMA, with a lot of AGATHOCLES thrown in. This is the first time I have a bass too, something I thought was definitely lacking in FILTH. Bass being my favourite instrument to play, I think I paid it a nice tribute with the intro of Sadist With A Chainsaw. The song titles aren't inspired by their influences this time, but are based on the concept of the chainsaw in horror movies / stories. All the tracks are a reference to a medium where the chainsaw is prevalent : When Derek Goes Berserk refers to the end of BAD TASTE where the character Derek goes on a rampage with a chainsaw, Chainsaw On Mars is about the game DOOM where you rip and tear demon with the old 'saw, Chainsaw Wielding Gasmask Mooks is about PHANTASM 2, and Sadist With A Chainsaw is of course a reference to PIECES, the strange chainsaw-based slasher of the 80's (which, in french, is titled "Le Sadique à la Tronçonneuse" - the literal translation of Sadist With a Chainsaw !). The incredible cover art is the work of Pierre, who also did the logo and who was perhaps the biggest supporter of PxCxS ; it is a direct reference to the elevator scene in PIECES.

SPLIT WITH BIRTH & PARAZITOZIS (Tracks 13 - 20)

Originally released by Regurgitative Noise Records & Virus Productions

All instruments by CSW

Recorded at Stench Of Burning Death Studios, 2013

Cover art by Gruesome Graphx

I love this split. The cover art was commissioned by Chris from BIRTH and is incredibly fitting, Nev from GRUESOME GRAPHX perfectly grasped everything about the three bands. This is the one where I start to drift off a bit from EXULCERATION / XYSMA and start to add more influences, like DEAD INFECTION, lots of AGATHOCLES and even a bit of SIEGE on That's No Gator. This is a release I'm proud of, BIRTH being one of the bands that got me back into goregrind, and the presence of PARAZITOZIS eventually led me to meet Marci in person during the european 30XX / PARAZITOZIS / HALITOSIS tour where I played bass for 30XX. Although this tour did not end well and soured the relationship between us, I genuinely cherish this release because of what it lead to. PARAZITOZIS and especially BIRTH are magistral on this record.

A SYMPHONY OF DEATH RATTLES COMPILATION (Tracks 21 - 24)

Originally released by A Symphony Of Death Rattles

All instruments by CSW

Recorded at Stench Of Burning Death Studios, 2013

Cover art by Pierre de Palmas

Now this was an honor to be part of. If there is only one record that can sum up everything best with goregrind at this time, it's this compilation, and it was mindblowing to be asked to be a part of. Seriously, have you seen this line-up ? HYEPEREMESIS, PATISSERIE, ONIKU, BIRTH, MEATUS, ACTIVE STENOSIS, BLUE HOLOCAUST... Only the best of what the gore underground had to offer is gathered here and I still have a hard time to believe my happy accident was added to the cast. The tracks were recorded during the same session as the split with BIRTH and PARAZITOZIS and have a very similar sound, however I think the influences are more clearly EXULCERATION and early NAPALM DEATH than on the split. The opening sample is from THRILLER : A CRUEL PICTURE.

CHOP ! HACK ! SNAP ! CRUNCH ! (Tracks 25 - 27)

All instruments by CSW

Recorded at Stench Of Burning Death Studios, 2013

Cover art by CSW / Gore Shriek parts

Originally part of Chainsaws, they had to be cut down in order to fit the time limit of the 7" format. I decided to release them anyway as an internet freebie because I don't like to sit on tracks. The song titles are still about chainsaws, but are all about THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE for the sake of concept. Family has a bit of a personal history as it's one of the first grind songs I ever wrote, back when I was 16. The cover art is made up of Gore Shriek panels again.

不渡りの虐殺 (Tracks 28 - 35)

Originally released by Gruesome Graphx (CD) & Goatgrind Records (Tape)

All instruments by CSW

Recorded at Stench Of Burning Death Studios, 2014 - 2016

Cover art by Karen Solvéry

This fucking release. I think it is one of the best-received and it defintely stands out thanks to the beautiful cover art by Karen Solvéry, which is a clear departure from the other ones. The whole concept of the release (song titles, EP title, cover art) is a tribute to japanese samurai cinema, more precisely jidai-geki and chambara movies (especially Akira Kurosawa and Kinji Fukasaku). All samples are from Kinji Fukasaku's Samurai Resurrection. Why samurai movies ? Because they are full of gore, blood splashes, disembowelment and other bodily harm !! Anyway, this release was an absolute pain. Originally intended to be a split release with 30XX and PARAZITOZIS, it never saw the light of the day because of the aforementioned soured relationships between Marci, Andrew and me (my fault entirely)... And then personal tragedies pushed the completion of the songs. It took me almost two years between recording the instruments and the vocals. When I finally managed to do it, I tried to get this released on vynil, but couldn't find anyone interested. Fed up, I put up everything online because I'd rather have people listening to my music than sitting on it. I had just met Alex (ALS) and Tom (TLT) in their death metal band AEON PATRONIST, and they had accepted to lend me a hand with PxCxS just for the fun of it. We had a rehearsal and recorded it. Alex, being the incredible sound techie he is, made it sound like a fucking studio take ; it was good enough for a release in itself. Around that time, Nev from GRUESOME GRAPHX offered to release 不渡りの虐殺 on his CD-r label, and eager to finally release it somewhere, I agreed and offered to add the rehearsal tracks as a bonus. Antoine from GOATGRIND followed with an offer to make a tape version, and I accepted all the same. Adding those tracks was half good and half bad as far as ideas go : they were so much better than the actual release... But they were just a sign of things to come. I think they greatly participated in the good reception of 不渡りの虐殺. All in all, it took almost three hellish years to complete it and I hated it for a long time, but as of now this is my favourite release after Chainsaws ; it's raw and more brutal than my previous work. This is maybe the least EXULCERATION sounding release of PxCxS, as I was way more into ARCHAGATHUS, VIOLENT GORGE and generally mincecore at the time of writing. Naginata Impalement is a total tribute to TERRORIZER, though, while Shinsengumi Bastard is kindof my jidai-geki parody of DOOM's Police Bastard. 断頭の切腹 is my attempt at merging the eerie songs found on AGATHOCLES' Razor Sharp Daggers with my own stuff.

MATUL JAMBOREE (Tracks 36 - 43)

Originally released by Grindfather Productions & Campaign For Musical Destruction

CSW - Guitars, bass, vocals

Evan - Drums

Cover art by Captain Arkham Freakles

Another hellish release ! Matul Jamboree is a collaboration with Evan from METASTASIS, which is one of my favourite bands from the one-man mincegore wave. This release was a real pain to do, not because of the distance or artistic differences, but because both Evan and I are afflicted with various mental illnesses and hard lives that make collaborating hard as fuck. It took more than a year for us to do this. We agreed on a collaboration in 2014 ; it took months for Evan to be able to record drums, and another year for me to record the rest. Mixing everything was a nightmare too because I only had a pair of crappy headphones and couldn't hear anything on proper gear until it was released. This is probably the weakest sounding release of PxCxS, but it's also the most brutal. I'm back to some EXULCERATION type riffing, but with Evan's crazy fast drumming and the generally suffocating sound, it turned into some sort of tribute to south-american goregrind like ROTTING FLESH. It's definitely the most extreme of PxCxS' releases. Evan is absolutely killing it on drums ! Despite the weak production I'm very happy with this one. Concept-wise, it's a tribute to LUCIO FULCI and especially ZOMBIE aka ZOMBI 2, one of the best horror movies ever. Songs and samples are direct references to the movie, as well as the cover art.

不渡りの虐殺 Bonus Tracks (Tracks 44 - 49)

Originally released by Gruesome Graphx (CD) & Goatgrind Records (Tape)

CSW - Bass / vocals

ALS - Guitars

TLT - Drums

Not really a separate release, those tracks were a bonus on 不渡りの虐殺 because I wanted to show what the full line-up was capable of. It is a live recording of the very first rehearsal with what I consider the most representative tracks of PxCxS, in all of their mincing EXULCERATION worshipping glory. Those tracks end this compilation because they represent the new era of the band and how we sound now. It's a taste of things to come and I couldn't keep this for myself. Enjoy those, this is just the beginning.
