20 MORE BANDS ADDED TO THE WACKEN OPEN AIR 2023 LINE-UP !!!

PRESS RELEASE:

Metalheads!

Today we unleash another massive band wave! This includes many well-known faces with cult status like Voivod and Dark Tranquility as well as brand new sensations like Sleep Token or Black Mirrors, which stirred up quite a bit of dust in the scene!

Here are the bands (in alphabetical order):

All For Metal

Robin and Batman? Thor and Loki? Asterix and Obelix? Move over! Here are Antonio and Tetzel. The metal world has a new front man duo, heading in the brand-new band project All For Metal. Epic songs, goose bumps and a look and feel that Boris Vallejo would be proud of, are the themes here. A feast für the ears and eyes!

Black Mirrors

Fluttering between genres from Hardrock to Doom & Stoner via straight in your face 90s Heavy are Belgians not-so-secret-anymore female fronted Black Mirrors. With powerhouse Marcella singing her heart out and the rest of the gang delivering the full package, we are sure you will fall in love with them like we did.

Blitzkid

Never say never! In 2020 Horror-Punk fans all over the word rejoiced, because genre-leaders Blitzkid’s founding members Argyle Goolsby and TB Monstrosity announced that it is time for “The Kid” to get it’s sh… together again. Originally founded in 1997 they may have been influenced by the Misfits - but now they for sure are an inspiration for many others.

Cellar Darling

Switzerland is famous for its beautiful mountains, delicious cheese and the maybe not so pretty split of Anna, Ivo and Merlin from Folk Metal giants Eluveitie. But as they say: Every ending is also a new beginning; the trio founded Cellar Darling and channeled their already long trained teamspirits into the magic of the new project.

Cemican

Doing some time travelling will take you to a Mexiko, that had not been invaded by Columbus and offered a colorful bouquet of rituals, customs and tribal activities. Some of them have faded like your favorite Wacken shirt but fear no more Cemican are here to stay and to keep the Aztec-traditions alive. With theatric assets, some lyrics in Nahuatl and even the use of traditional instruments like rattles and pipes they will surely hover you into another dimension.

dArtagnan

One for all and all for one! You will surely remember where this quote stems from and probably already sense which band we are talking about: dArtagnan. These German musical musketeers are no stranger to catchy melodies and thus continue to raise not only the Folk Metal bar but also their chart positions.  If you are new to the “Tier” check out their collaboration with Candice Night on the revamp of the drinking-song “Song ar christr” on their last album and we are sure you will raise your glass to them as well!

Dark Tranquility

Mikael Stanne: A name that should ring a couple of bells in every metal-head! And while we were lucky enough to present the debut of his new project “The Halo Effect” in 22, we are happy to welcome him back this year with his long-term-band and Swedish Melodic Death spearheads Dark Tranquility. With a new line up and their latest album Moment in their suitcase they are on their way to the Holy Ground.

Der W

Former enfant terrible but also THE polarizing personality of German rock: It certainly wasn't always easy to be THE W. All the more reason to take us on his personal journey that brought him to his solo band project years ago. And it does not get more personal than here. A lot becomes clear, some things are burned in forever and the conclusion remains: Wherever Der W is, Rock resides. And that's the most important thing.

Finntroll

What would be a proper Nordic theme without a couple of mythological creatures? While we strongly rely on you to bring the pink unicorns, we will open the stage for some of the fiercest Finns Metal has to offer: Finntroll! Prepare for a wild gathering from the underworld and don’t forget your pointy ears.

Marty Friedman

When you recite Metal’s most skilled guitarists-list you will have to name Marty Friedman very quickly. Probably most famous for his 10 years in Megadeth, Marty is an absolut 6-string-icon and it is not surprising that his talent not only is an essential guide to everyone learning the guitar, but also a solid staple in TV-shows dealing with talent and music in his expat-homecountry Japan!

Monsters of Liedermaching

Whether it's about salamander foreskin diets or door fetishists, stories about superheroes or eternal losers, licking lanterns or kissing muses. There are no limits in the monster cosmos. It can be pogged, swayed and wallowed. Sometimes funny, sometimes serious. The incompatibility of delicate ballads and bizarre sing-along evergreens is eliminated and the monster magic can unfold.

Morast

If the name Morast does not ring a bell YET, we will forgive you but urge you to keep an eye out for the German Doom-Sludgers that have their firm roots in other bands, namely the legendary Hammerhead and the underground-icons Serpent Eater. In English Morast means swampy grounds and that is exactly where their brutal punch will take you and drown your intestines during their debut at the WOA.

Mutz & The Blackeyed Banditz

If you are a fan of Wacken and an avid visitor there is no way you have not met Mutz before. As longtime collaborator, friend, inner circle-musician and even stage manager, he is one of the WOA-faces you should remember. In his project with The Blackeyed Banditz he aims a bit away from his metal-roots and makes fans of (Made in Germany)-Americana and Southern Rock happy.

Possessed

Not all heroes wear capes - some wear spikes and founded Death Metal. The story of Possessed and their leadsinger Jeff Becerra is one of getting back in the ring, never being defeated against the odds and most of all delivering pure brain-grinding Metal. Already from their beginning in 1983 the Bay Area band became synonymous with being the first band using the term Death Metal, putting out the first groundbreaking album of the genre. But Possessed’s first coming was short lived and came to a halt, when Jeff tragically and accidentally was hurt in a shooting that left him paralyzed. He withdrew from music until the late 90s and more importantly until the reunion of Possessed in 2007 which was crowned with a spectacular gig on our Holy Ground. Wacken has been a steady anchor for the band to return to and we are psyched to welcome them back!

Skindred

If it would not be for Skindred I am pretty sure we would have never thought that mixing Reggae, Funk and Metal can sound so dope! Being veterans of the art of putting together a bloody, twangy cocktail already with the band Dub Step, Skindred have been gracing the stages since the late 90s. Hailing from the lesser as Rock’n’Roll capital known, beautiful Wales, their exceptional status probably had been predestined. That it would last over years and years is surely thanks due the capacities of charismatic and spellbinding front man Benji Webbe.

Sleep Token

Do believe the hype! Even though Sleep Token have been together since over 6 years, the buzz that has been around this band in the last months has been phenomenal. As are the speculations who hides behind those masks and is responsible for the highly complicated, enchanting Post-Metal that again sounds so different and fresh and distinguishes them from their genre colleagues.  Legend has it Sleep Token worship the cult of a higher being called Sleep, which is interesting, cause sleeping is definitely the last thing you want to do, while listening to them.

The Answer

Over 300,000 sold records, six studio albums and worldwide tours, among others with bands like AC/DC. It's no wonder that The Answer hold the title of "pioneers of the new wave of Classic Rock". After seven long years, the band returns with a new album. "Sundowners" is the name of their new masterpiece. An album that captures the soul of a band that not only wants to rekindle the spark but burn even brighter than ever before.

The Night Eternal

The Night Eternal impresses on record as well as live on stage with their virtuous, precise but forceful performance across all ¬ve musicians. Fans of In Solitude, Tribulation, The Devil’s Blood or Judas Priest will buzz about the exceptional riffs and catchy melodies which conate to a band that honors, but never imitates their 80s paragons.

The Raven Age

It might be a blessing and a curse to be the son of the bandleader and bass player from one of the biggest Metal bands in the world, Iron Maiden. Undisputedly the talents runs in the family though, and who would not use it to form a band!  As did George Harris and Dan Wright by 2009 and by 2013, the Raven Age was a fully formed quintet, with Matt Cox joining on bass and backing vocals, Michael Burrough on lead vocals, and Jai Patel on drums. The name of the band is inspired by the mythology surrounding the ravens that reside in the Tower of London. Legend has it that if the ravens ever leave, the tower and the monarchy will fall.

Voivod

Another band that needs no further introduction and can be easily named in one sentence with the likes of Kreator and Venom is Voivod. The Canadian Noise-Metal-Cyberpunk continues to deliver and scratch the boundaries, that might have kept them from becoming as huge as their stage-sharers, but also cement them as indestructible force majeure of the underground.

But that's not all! More bands will follow in the next weeks so stay tuned!

ULTHAR RELEASE 2 NEW ALBUMS "ANTHRONOMICON" & "HELIONOMICON"

PRESS RELEASE:

Anthronomicon and Helionomicon, the two new full-length studio offerings from West Coast blackened death metal trio ULTHAR, are currently streaming in their engrossing entireties. The streams come in advance of the records’ official release this Friday, February 17th via 20 Buck Spin.

Anthronomicon embodies the continued progression of ULTHAR’s mastery over its art. From the opening blasts and twisting mania of “Cephalophore,” ULTHAR baffles with angular warped riffage, dipping in and out of various dimensional spheres. Off-kilter, multi-directional turns veer swiftly and violently as though about to come apart at the seams only to reshape again and again into ever more monumental forms. Each of Anthronomicon’s eight tracks represent a fractious piece of a larger puzzle, each a maze unto itself that when taken together allows one to traverse this inverted surrealist conundrum.

Where its sister album Anthronomicon presents an eight-piece puzzle of labyrinthine tumult, Helionomicon takes those elements and creates two towering twenty-minute monoliths of radiant avant-garde immensity. Each track, appropriately titled “Helionomicon” and “Anthronomicon,” transports the listener on a vast journey of psycho-cerebral spectacle where hitherto unimagined landscapes take shape and strange intangible structures pierce the disintegrating firmament. Despite the substantial length of these two tracks, it’s never a tedious ride; each visits countless new vistas and perspectives across time. In essence, Helionomicon becomes a synthesis of all ULTHAR’s recorded output to this point across two climactic, ambitious epics.

Stream ULTHAR’s Anthronomicon at THIS LOCATION. Stream Helionomicon at THIS LOCATION.

Anthronomicon and Helionomicon were each recorded in April 2022 at Developing Nations in Baltimore, Maryland by Kevin Bernsten and mastered at Signaturetone in Minneapolis, Minnesota by Adam Tucker. Each album cover is half of a larger original piece created for ULTHAR by Ian Miller (Stormkeep, Bolt Thrower, Games Workshop). Additional artwork was created by the band's Steve Peacock. Fans of Atrocity, Absu, Enslaved, Gorguts, Demilich, Krallice, Deathspell Omega, Voidceremony, Tomb Mold, Suffering Hour, and the like, pay heed.

Anthronomicon and Helionomicon will be released on CD, LP, cassette, and digital formats. Find physical preorders at THIS LOCATION. Find digital preorders for Anthronomicon HERE and Helionomicon HERE.

MEDEVIL RELEASE "MIRROR IN THE DARKNESS"

PRESS RELEASE:

Chilliwack, BC, Canada's Medevil’s progressive and powerful metal has reached new heights with their second album, which is now up for pre-order and will be fully released in April. Those who pre-order the album now on Bandcamp will be treated to the single “The Signal”, a venture into more progressive territory than they have before. They go into detail about the track:

“This is the first song we could consider being an ‘epic’ on the album. This is also the first song to feature Ken Schellenberg’s orchestral elements. “The Signal” is a dynamic blend of heavy emotion and a delicate atmosphere. The lyrics are about looking for signs of issues or problems in your life, with themes of hospitals and life/death.”

Compared to their first album, 2016’s “Conductor of Storms”, which was comparatively much simpler lyrically, melodically, and rhythmically, they have pulled a lot more inspiration from progressive bands, and the soundscapes have a lot more depth than they’ve had in the past.

When it comes to song selection, most of the songs came up during the break between albums and were added to the album based solely on the band’s excitement about them. Some other tracks were pulled up from musical experiments that felt like they added some much-needed colour to the overall tracklist. While they don’t currently have other songs recorded, they are still actively working on new music for the future.

“Mirror in the Darkness” is dedicated to the passing of Medevil's drummer and friend Chris Malcolmson whose drums are recorded on the album. It is recommended listening for fans of Metal Church, Accept, and Baroness.

WÜLFSKOL AND HEXELLA RELEASE SPLIT CD

PRESS RELEASE:

Wulfskol/Hexella

Split

Goat Throne Records

31 March 2023

The death-punk hybrid WULFSKOL and grinding metal punk outfit HEXELLA unleash the ever-darkening realms in their upcoming split album, Burn With Us. Having sculpted a distortion fueled escape into the abyss, Burn With Us will be released in March 2023 via Goat Throne Records.

WULFSKOL unearth an unhinged attack of speed and anguish with their opening track "Deliver Us To Evil". The quartet bring a high-octane approach to the murky gloom with dynamic rhythms and a punk-twist which continues into "Violator". A heavy invasion of the senses, hefty guitars bring an immense sound to this track. Their cover of SLAYER's "Evil Has No Boundaries" yields a devilish flair with loud and noisy instrumentation accompanied by monstrous choir of lost souls. Meanwhile, HEXELLA deliver a ferocious onslaught of intense heavy guitars, unforgiving bass and thundering percussion, all of which is enhanced with demonic vocals manifesting from Noelia Garza. HEXELLA's offering begins with "Midnight's On Fire", a fierce demonstration of their monstrous sound. "Mal Creada" unleashes all fury with high intensity that runs throughout the entire track contrasts with the riff-filled, rhythmic nature of the BATHORY cover "You Don't Move Me (I Don't Give A Fuck)".

The two bands both carry their own distinctive characters which shine through both halves of the album. Burn With Us is a thrilling exploration that descends into the depths and showcases the monsters that lurk there.

Burn With Us will be available on tape, vinyl, CD and digital, with the cover tracks available on physical formats only.

About WULFSKOL:

WULSFKOL was formed in Houston, TX around 2015 by death metal vocalist, David Herrera, along with Zike Lee, Hector Tenorio, and Joseph Banuelos. The band emerged with a shared goal a sound some would compare to MOTORHEAD meets THE MISFITS corrupted by the likes of SAMHAIN, BATHORY, VENOM and POSSESSED to name a few. WÜLSFKOL debuted with a strictly limited four track rehearsal demo which featured the song “I am the Devil's Blood". Shortly after the release, Joseph left to pursue other ventures and Shane Wilson was sought out as the band's replacement in 2016. WULFSKOL unveiled their first full-length album Hellshock in 2017 and dropped their most recent offering, the Satanik Death Militia EP in 2021.

CRANEIUM RELEASE NEW SINGLE: "SANDS OF GOLD"

PRESS RELEASE:

Finnish fuzzrock outfit CRANEIUM has unleashed their new single "Sands of Gold". Oozing with heavy blues rock, lashings of fuzz and hopeful lyrics, CRANEIUM deliver a guitar-driven sound. "Sands of Gold" follows the band's 2021 album Unknown Heights.

Guitarist Martin, who also handles the lead vocal duties on the track, explains:

“The line 'we all must do our part / got a new world here in our hearts' is inspired by a quote by anarcho-syndicalist Buenaventura Durruti. The song is about believing in your thing and staying true to your ideas, even if it at times may seem dark. Something we all could use a little more of right now.”

“Sands of Gold” is out now on all streaming platforms via The Sign Records. Stream the single here: https://youtu.be/O1Q4JwrPLEg

ODINFIST RELEASE "REMADE IN STEEL"

PRESS RELEASE:

Hailing from British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley in Canada, Odinfist are well known around the country for their distinctive brand of traditional heavy metal that is wrapped up in a fun-loving and energetic package. They’ve been around for 16 years, and have an impressive discography under their belts. Their latest addition to this is “Remade in Steel”, six pummeling tracks that lay on heavy riffs, fun choruses, and enough variance to get anyone excited about what is coming next. The third single is “Deadline” - this is the Metallica song, it is also the Megadeth song. It goes from doomy to thrashy, with lots of chromatic riffages. The lyrics are about trying to survive under pressure, crushing anxiety, and running out of time. The band comments:

“This is the last song that we wrote for the album, and it came together rather quickly. There are a lot of twists and turns in this song. It builds from a doomy intro to a groovy verse and chorus and then explodes into a frantic, thrashing ending. Both the lyrics and music have a darker vibe and tone to them. The vocals get pretty unhinged and “crazy” on this song.”

According to the band, their music has become more melodic and complex over the years. They’ve been pushing the confines of traditional metal, by incorporating other subgenres. They had been doing the whole traditional metal thing for about 10 years before it really got cool again. "Back then, the only thing like that really going on was 3 Inches of Blood". Now they are stoked there is way more new traditional metal to also draw influence from.

Each song on “Remade in Steel” offers a unique musical experience, where you don’t always know what’s going to come next in a song or a track. The end result is a complete album that has a little bit for everyone, and a sense of completion at the very end. They are recommended for fans of Eternal Champion, Cauldron, and Anvil.

RED CAIN RELEASE VIDEO FOR "WE ARE CHAOS"

PRESS RELEASE:

During these past few months, Calgary, Canada's fantasy metal Red Cain has surfaced two singles "Fisher King" and "Blight" and are now ready to share their next "We Are Chaos" with all of them and future tracks to be featured on their forthcoming album entitled "NÄE'BLISS" due out on April 28th. Their third full-length album “NÄE'BLISS" is a homage to the legendary world of Robert Jordan's fantasy epic "The Wheel of Time" (novel/TV series). With a grimdark edge, down-tuned guitars, death and power prog metal influences, and an unrelenting march forward, "NÄE'BLISS" is a foray into the reverse side of the Wheel of Time story - that of the Forsaken, antagonists, instruments of the Great Lord of the Dark, and the brutal and captivating allure of letting Chaos reign supreme.

The band explains further:

“We are fascinated by antagonists, why they stand against the “common good”, and how they came to fill that role - and when reading the Wheel of Time, there was the same intrigue behind how the very clearly defined “evil” faction in this world justified its existence. Why did the Forsaken willingly join the Shadow? Why do some men and women want the world to burn, and the Wheel to stop spinning? Within such a carefully crafted narrative and beautifully balanced universe, there were puzzling, unexplored gaps that we were determined to delve deeper into.

And of course, fantasy is but a mirror of reality - so outside WoT lore, these questions apply equally well to the world beyond our window. Which of our idols are false, which heroes degenerate, and what history is a compendium of careful lies? It is all too easy to raise your fist against those labeled evil by the multitudes or a voice above while failing to realize you yourself are the instrument of tyranny and corruption.

We are all massive fantasy fans, and for us, Wheel of Time rubs shoulders with LOTR as a genre-defining epic fantasy series that started it all. The world of the Wheel is a brutal, compelling world with multitudes of fascinating characters, and we were particularly interested in exploring its more visceral aspects - an area that begs to be paired with heavy metal. We’ve seen some of our musical icons, like Blind Guardian, successfully go down this path, and it was magnificent to see new musical interpretations of those stories spun out by them - not to mention some bloody good fun.

Now, it is our turn to ride forward in another turn of the Wheel. Enjoy!"

Continuing the experimental nature of the previous single “Blight”, “We Are Chaos” plants its flag firmly in death metal territory, with vocalists Evgeniy Zayarny and Kalie Yan trading off growls amid heavy, groove-laden riffs, backlit by the usual eerie soundscapes, and Samuel Ridout’s staccato guitar work. A plunge into the nature of chaos, promises broken, and a bond that threatens mutual destruction, “We Are Chaos” is very much a new iteration of the core Red Cain sound, and an emphatic musical and visual statement en route to the upcoming album release.

The band adds about the new single:

"Ruminations on chaos. Four rebellious souls plotting against a tyrant. An occult ceremony. A secret waiting to be torn open. Red Cain’s new single + music video “We Are Chaos” brings us back into the universe of the Wheel of Time, into the lair of the Forsaken - the Chosen, as they see themselves - in their resistance to the unending turning of the Wheel.

Under the leadership of the enigmatic Moridin, irreversibly tied to their enemy, the Dragon Reborn, Sammael, Demandred, and Semirhage are the bulwark against the rising tide of the Dragon and his followers, and the decaying status quo that his ascension brings."

"We Are Chaos" was mastered by Alan Sascha Laskow (Every Hour Kills, ex-Divinity) and mixed by Tyler Corbett, (Sole Audio).

Watch and listen to the music video via its premiere on MetalInsider HERE.

Red Cain is recommended for fans of Kamelot, Symphony X, Myrath, Powerwolf, Mastodon, and The Contortionist.

Red Cain, from Calgary, Canada is a modern progressive metal project with Eastern European roots. They have been making waves since their first release in 2016, with award-winning music videos and concept albums “Kindred: Act I” and “Kindred: Act II”. Red Cain’s first two full albums conceptually told a sprawling story of how raw and primal ancient myth collides with modern society and human yearning toward the stars, toward perfection. The albums contained a ton of genre inspirations, from gothic rock to ambient electronica, power, black, and death metal, and were universally lauded for their inventiveness, variety, and strong conceptual content. They continue this momentum with forthcoming releases.

MORTALUS RELEASE "THE FIXX"

PRESS RELEASE:

Heavy Metal trio MORTALUS have released "The FiXX," the second single from forthcoming sophomore album We Are Human. Check out the single at mortalus.bandcamp.com/track/the-fixx

MORTALUS will release We Are Human on February 24. An album teaser video is available at youtu.be/H5kop6yqgLA

MORTALUS is equal parts classic and modern, heavy and melodic, power and finesse, focused and loose.  We Are Human is a showcase of all parts.  It has been a whirlwind since the last album was released.  Impactful events such as a global pandemic, political and worldwide turmoil, addiction, inequality and prejudice, losing family members, decayed friendships, and re-evaluation of one’s own perspective all went into the making of We Are Human.  The band takes its craft very seriously, but by the time the album closes, the listener will know that they still like to have a little fun while

they're at it.

FFO: Anthrax, D.R.I., Evergrey, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Nightwish, Slayer

BIO:

Heavy Metal. It's a term used to describe a genre of music that, in the 21st century, is as expansive as an ocean, with as many subgenre titles as there are species and all the seas. For Mortalus, their brand of metal is an ocean that can be deep and dark, pristine and beautiful, or full on, hull-crushing fury.

The members of Mortalus are students of their craft, striving to be always at the top of their game. Being described as "modern old school" isn't much of a stretch. The influences are vast expanses, ranging from the obvious, like "The Big Four," Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, to Evergrey, D.R.I., Nightwish, and Toto.

The three metalheads of Mortalus wear the title as a badge of honor. Fronted by the Cat 5 hurricane known as "Metal" Michelle Gann, she would be impressive enough as a lead vocalist if not for her beautifully intense guitar skills. Bassist and vocalist Bryan "Bedrock" Bedgood brings in a quirky, melodic style to the ocean bed low end. Drummer Patrick "Gumbo" Mahoney possesses battleship power and intensity behind the kit. Long time a quartet, Mortalus has since become a trio, writing and recording music filled with passion, melody, and yes, power.
