When seven friends from Munich (DE) — Stefanie (front vocals), Severin (e-guitar, acoustic guitar, flutes, backing vocals), Max Schmid (bass, backing vocals), Valentin Seipt (bagpipe), Marianne Lasota (violin), Michael Paintner (drums) und Christian Maier (e-guitar) — sat by the campfire at night on a medieval faire in 2014, forming a band was nothing but a spontaneous idea. As they didn’t lack creativity nor drive it turned into a lot more after a short period of time already and they made their own history: from medieval faires onto the great stage.

BRACHMOND combines medieval folk instrumentation and ancient german language lyrics with rock and metal elements creating an unforgettable, enthralling sound - a successful mix of Subway to Sally, Feuerschwanz and Eluveitie.

Their self-produced album „Ascheregen“ (2018) is now followed by the new single „Teufelstanz“ (release: 23rd July 2021) which was produced with Reinhard von Wegen (Vroudenspil, KAFFKIEZ, Koenix…). A song hiding a gloomy attraction, using various kinds of longings and fears to get us on its side. Knowing full well we approach darkness as some allurements can’t be defied.

Robert Graves comments: "With 'Lone Wolf', the band and I agreed right away that this was an opportunity to create a narrative driven video that would convey the song's lyrical themes, while also creating an engaging visual experience. And so, a noir-styled heist in the heart of LA just seemed to fit the song perfectly. We decided to keep the story simple and allow the tone of the video to help convey the song's significance. This gave us (the crew) the opportunity to create an aesthetic that intensified the song's mood, while also getting some incredible action scenes to tell the story. Needless to say, Armored Saint fans are in for a ride. I think they're gonna love it!"

Bassist Joey Vera adds: "Working again with director Robert Graves was incredible. Not only is this video great to watch, but underneath the storyline lies a layer of allegory, metaphor and symbolism. Kind of a first for us. John Bush's great lyrics twist and turn into meanings not visible at first sight. It's a view into a person's journey through life and how they maneuver through it all and what they gain from that experience in the end. This time we pushed the dialogue. It was challenging for me, but I had fun with it. For motivation, I tried to channel some of the great actors who come into the casting studio that my wife and I run.

Leaders and stalwarts of the American heavy metal scene since the early 80s, Armored Saint's latest release, Punching The Sky (2020), sees them returning hard. A diverse, attitude-drenched collection, it's everything the band's faithful have come to expect from them while pushing their signature sound forward. With Vera acting as producer, he recruited the same engineering team that worked on Win Hands Down (2015) with drums recorded by Josh Newell at El Dorado Studios in Burbank, CA, guitars tracked by Bill Metoyer at Skullseven studios in North Hollywood, CA, and vocals, bass and additional recordings by the bassist at his studio. Mixed by Jay Ruston (Anthrax, Amon Amarth, Stonesour), the record also features a few guest musicians further expanding its sonic palette, the whole thing kicking off with the sound of Uilleann Pipes, Vera finding player Patrick D'Arcy in LA and recruiting him to the cause. Guns 'N' Roses keyboardist Dizzy Reed also contributes, Vera giving both him and D'Arcy some general directions and letting them loose, both of them delivering strong performances. More melodies and heavier at the same time? While it may seem contradictory at first, this is the best description for the stylistic evolution which KINGS WINTER has undergone in the two years since their debut EP "Forging The Cataclysm". While the foundation of Melodic Heavy Metal remains, the keyboards move significantly into the background on the new album and leave more space for powerful guitar riffs, which are repeatedly contrasted with catchy guitar leads, often reminiscent of Scandinavian Melodic Death Metal.

The debut album "Edge Of Existence" is completed by the multi-layered vocals of frontwoman Jule Dahs, who shows all facets of her voice ranging from classic clean vocals to a powerful rock voice, with occasional growls added to the mix.

"I read this quote by chance at the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and was shocked by its relevance to the current situation," Tobias comments on the creation of the album title. "A little more than a year ago, no one would have believed that we would experience such restrictions in private and public life. But that only shows how unstable this living system, that we are a part of, really is and how one event that might appear small at first glance, can have global consequences." As soon as playing concerts is possible again, fans of the band will also have the opportunity to experience KINGS WINTER live on stage for the first time. "Shortly after the EP was released, we got the first messages asking when and where we could be seen on stage. We had never really thought about it beforehand, but after all the positive feedback for "Forging The Cataclysm" and with this new set of songs in hand, we hope to put together a live band over the course of this year so that we can play our first gigs whenever things return to normality," says Jule about the plans for the future of the band.

WASTED LAND RELEASE VIDEO FOR "FADE AWAY"

Saudi Arabia’s Wasted Land has a new single coming out entitled “Fade Away”, this is following their self-titled 2013 album. Since that full-length, the band suggests that they have evolved over time from being melody and folk focused into something heavier, but still having a strong melodic base.

Lyrically, the single talks about someone having severe depression and comparing his journey in life to that of a candle, getting shorter and shorter until it eventually burns out. Then he finds his soul’s salvation after his death. Musically, it starts with heavy doses of melody which are complimented by heavy riffs and even more melodies. To contribute to the theme of depression and life’s waning, it carries a somber and melancholic tune near the end. The band comments on the track:

“It’ll be a new mixture from our old folkish style with more heavy catchy riffs and chorus. We hope we can catch the attention from the old fans and attract new ones.”

For Wasted Land, they compose the music first and then create lyrics that fit. For this song in particular guitarist Ayman composed the lyrics a long time ago for his previous band Banj. Writing for the band is a joint endeavour between guitarists Ayman and Ahmed whenever they jam together. Vocalist Emad adds his flavours in the lyrics and of course the vocal lines.

Wasted Land originally formed in 2005 to participate in Metal II gig in Dammam. Ahmed and Ayman were jamming together and felt there was chemistry between them while composing folky melodic death metal. From there they decided to add more members to create a full band. They were one of the first Saudi metal bands to get massive media exposure from outlets like CNN, BBC radio and other local and international newspapers.

Open your ears to hear a voice thick with sorrow & open your eyes to only see the sin... Thine Inner Sanctum - A dark musical void of the psyche. What started out as a few demos soon bore some darkened fruit and Thine Inner Sanctum was born.

Thine Inner Sanctum is a blackened Doom project hailing from Glasgow, Scotland. Primarily a one man venture Thine Inner Sanctum started their musical journey in August 2019, by January 2020 a five track demo EP titled 'Entwined With a Dying Light' had surfaced and was then sent out to various independent labels on the simple basis of getting some outside feedback, at the time. Much to their surprise however it was very swiftly picked up by Edinburgh based extreme metal label Ancient Entity Records . Within a few months of release both Ancient Entity and TIS had sold out…This then begged the question when was its follow up coming out?

Fast forward to May 2021 and the sophomore effort ‘Dark Sky Weeping’ was released. This was again released through Ancient Entity Records but this time there was a bit of a buzz. Since release there has been very positive feedback. With DSW reaching close to a thousand streams via the Order ov the black arts YouTube channel, it appears that people are taking notice….

Sound wise TIS are not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeve for all to see. Taking a lot of inspiration from early 90's doom stalwarts, My Dying Bride and Paradise lost . However at its Death doom core there is a harsh underlying violence harkening back to Celtic Frost and the first wave of black metal influencing on early Emperor and Darkthrone . These influences shine through on tracks such as 'Dark Sky Weeping' , Three 'times denied' and 'Abyss of thine' a total nod to Celtic Frost's dreary yet epic 'Obscured' from their swansong release 'Monotheist'

Production is lofi, raw and visceral, Lyrical content is bleak and hopeless but in all the right places - Exactly what you want from an artist with the dangerous duality of old skool doom and black metal.

ARTACH RELEASE VIDEO FOR "SHIMMER"

 

PRESS RELEASE:

Coming from the coldest, windiest, snowiest, and foggiest city in Canada, St. John’s, Newfoundland's Artach is heavily influenced by nature and even takes after the bleak climate they are surrounded by. The result of months of winter provides inspiration for their raw, epic black metal that is in their new album “Sworn to Avenge”, which is now available via Depressive Illusions Records as of June 25th.

As described by Artach, their music is angry, savage, unhinged, but contains melody and some twists and turns to surprise the listener. Varied song tempos mixing blasting with thrashy, punky, doomy elements keep the sounds interesting and not monotone. They go into further detail about releasing their new music video for “Shimmer” for the full length's release day:

“Lyrically, this one is more descriptive and doesn’t have any hidden meanings. Those shimmering and dancing lights of the Aurora Borealis can be seen even here in Newfoundland, but further north they look magnificent. There’s a spoken part in this one taken from a part of a poem by David Vedder (1790-1854) that was written about the Northern Lights. “Sworn to Avenge” is the second album from Artach, following up 2020’s “Chronicles of a Black Winter”. Fans can expect more of the same compared to the first, but it pushes the envelope a little bit. Artach embraces evolution and aspire to play tighter, and have a more professional sound, but never sound overly polished. 

Artach’s process is a collaborative one between the duo, the genesis of the songs are arranged on guitar by Sruthán and very roughly recorded at home. After getting together, they record drums and flesh out the song in an afternoon and by then the song is pretty much ready for the studio recording of guitars, then bass, and lastly vocals. 

Artach is recommended listening for anyone interested in raw black metal and those with an interest in Celtic Frost, Darkthrone, and Satyricon.

“'Choke' has become a bit of a fan favourite over the past few years since 'Mire' was released and it’s one of ours too. I think the general consensus within the band is still that 'Choke' is the “best" Conjurer song that’s been released so far and showcases a lot of what we do. The video loosely follows the lyrical theme of the song, which looks at the way things like “fame” and pressure from society, the industry and the gutter press can affect artists and celebrities. The idea being that the shots of the band in a white room, dressed in suits represents someone being dressed up and pushed out to perform despite them clearly not being in the best state, and them then starting to deteriorate, and the dark, more aggressive shots representing the inner turmoil and struggle.”

OBVURT PLAYS SHOW AT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Quebecois-based death metal three-piece Obvurt have played a show at Saint-Albert-Le-Grand Elementary School, where the frontman Philippe Drouin teaches music. The guitar player had to relearn the guitar left-handed with legendary tutor Michael Angelo Batio after a car accident left him unable to use his right hand for picking.

«After being a victim of a car accident in late December 2016, I lost my picking as a right-handed guitar player for more than 15 years. After talking with Pat Martino in 2017, I bought my first left-handed guitar, and it begins there», he told Metal Sucks. «Since I made that choice, I tried to recover and practice a lot, trying to get my picking back on my right hand in 2018. I was playing both sides every day for a while. One day, I felt I was able to become left-handed, so I decided to leave everything behind and start over.»

Obvurt have recently released their debut EP The Beginning, which showcases Drouin's newly acquired left-handed skills.

What immediately stands out is the darker death metal tones found within “Rip Tide” – those tones signified in the deathly doom of acts such as Esoteric or Evoken – however, SUFFER YOURSELF create their own space, with the maturity from over a decade of craft and unblinkered vision.

Throughout “Rip Tide” there is an undercurrent of suffocating drone – with all tracks being built upon the claustrophobic foundations of a drone score created by Belarusian artist UGASANIE. From that point the expressive composition adds layers of beautifully dissonant guitar work that has a notable 90s death metal feel to it. Within that there is an almost cinematic scope to the album – with sounds and samples embroidered into the music. The final touch being delivered with a mesmerising cello part – that is wonderfully woven into the tracks and adds such depth. Even though the feel of the album is the same throughout there is a distinct difference between all tracks.

All these elements are brought together, to create a maelstrom, a master class in underground extreme death doom.

SUPREME CONCEPTION RELEASE "EMPIRES OF THE MIND" EP

SUPREME CONCEPTION is a technical death metal from the Czech Republic , conceived in 2006 as a one-time collaboration of established musicians from the Czech death metal scene. At the time, it was composed of Michal Kusak (vocals, ex DESPISE , ex IMPERIAL FOETICIDE ), Frank Serak (all guitars and bass, ex GARBAGE DISPOSAL , ex INTERVALLE BIZZARE ) and Jirka Zajic (drums programming, ex INTERVALLE BIZZARE). The trio came up with their own blend of technical brutal death metal in the vein of early DECREPIT BIRTH , SUFFOCATION or HATE ETERNAL . After the release of the “ Liturgy Of Spiritual Disturbance ” mini album in 2009, the three members went on to pursue other musical ventures, most notably HEAVING EARTH (Jirka Zajic and Michal Kusak).

In 2019, Michal Kusak asked Martin Meyer (guitars, Heaving Earth) to help revive SUPREME CONCEPTION as a full-time band. With the help of Aaron Stechauner (drums, INTERLOPER , ex RINGS OF SATURN , live THE FACELESS ), a new material was crafted in order to start the new chapter for SUPREME CONCEPTION . The change in the line-up has led the band away from brutal death metal to a more contemporary version of technical death metal.

The band will release their new mini album “Empires Of The Mind”, mixed and mastered by Chris Donaldson ( CRYPTOPSY ) and with the artwork by Orion Landau, on 6 August 2021.

Spanish band Barbarian Prophecies announce new album "Horizon", set to be released on August 16th (digital) and CD and LP on November 1st via Base Record Production, Hecatombe records, Violence In the Veins and Iron Matron Records.

Horizon is a conceptual album about the mysteries of man, the origin of the universe and the existence of life in it. The music contains a lot of experimental parts and a mix of diverse styles including passages supported by Synths, but with classic death metal sound.

SVARTA SANNINGAR RELEASE "KAPITEL 2"

On Friday the 21st of May, Svarta Sanningar (Swe) will release the EP ”Kapitel 2”, which is a stand-alone sequel to the previous EP ”Kapitel 1” from 2018. The band’s music can best be described as occult post-rock with elements of goth and metal. Svarta Sanningar has also built an entire concept around a fictional backstory, which includes an occult order society with the same name as the band. Unique, incredibly well thought out and tickling. Do you dare to throw yourself into the darkness with Svarta Sanningar as your companions?

The overall experience of ”Kapitel 2” can be summed up as a horror movie on VHS and an H.P Lovecraft drama on steroids. The songs are extremely well-written, professionally produced and an obvious continuation of the dark drama that began with the first EP. Already on the debut, the band found their unique sound, but this time they have taken it all one step further. Everything from artwork to song structure is now even sharper and finely honed to perfection. If you are attracted to Depeche Mode in their darkest moments, you will love this. Other more obvious references such as Ghost and Opeth must of course also be mentioned, but to fully understand Svarta Sanningar you must listen. Let yourself be embraced by the darkness. There is a high probability that you will stay. Welcome.

FACTS ABOUT SVARTA SANNINGAR

The band’s journey began in 2017 with two old friends, lukewarm beer and a dinner at a Chinese joint in Gothenburg. The founder the gothic metal band Beseech, Klas Bohlin (vocals) and Jonas Persson (guitar) were talking about music and vinyl records, but were also a bit excited in founding a new band. Svarta Sanningar was formed shortly after in the city of Borås, when Mattias Lejon (bass) and Håkan Carlsson (drums / Beseech), became a part of the dark musical vision.

In November 2018, the first EP ”Kapitel 1” was released. Despite lyrics in Swedish, Svarta Sanningar caught most attention outside Sweden, but also in respected media such as Inferno (Fin), Legacy Mag (Ger), RockHard (Ger), Made in Metal (Esp), Cryptic Rock (Usa) and S.O.S Heavy Metal Radio (Prt).

BACKSTORY - THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE LYRICS

On September 29, 1976, a landslide occurred on the Swedish island Fjärrö, which was officially declared a natural disaster. At the same time, excavations were underway on the island by the corrupt corporation PBCL Investments, which according to anonymous testimonies had connections to the occult order society Svarta Sanningar. The anxiety among the island’s free church activists was great and a wave of suspicion grew stronger, the closer they got to the truth and the local private clinic Fyrens Hospital. It is under the gray cloud of the past year that enigmatic blackened death-doom collective, Cult Burial, was born. Today they reveal their crushing new single “Parasite”.

Despite their doom roots, Cult Burial is anything but slow moving. Having formed in early 2020 in London the project rapidly developed, with the group starting from scratch and finishing an EP and an album within four months. The result is a punishingly heavy record that seeks to draw some of the darkest elements from the textures and atmospheres of less heavy music. This desire for crushing sounds has driven Cult Burial to the next demented level, setting them distinctly apart from many of their contemporaries.

The project formed when mastermind Simon accidentally acquired a baritone guitar after a heavy night of drinking. Within days he fell in love with the incredibly heavy sounds of the instrument and found some collaborators to work with. Quickly they pieced together their head turning debut EP, Sorrow.

After releasing their critically acclaimed debut last year, Cult Burial seeks to continue to plumb the depths of the human experience. This project is the sort of DIY experience that fuels the underground. It is ambitious, powerful and one of a kind. Now, Cult Burial are wallowing in the murk, conjuring new madness and waiting for their next chance to strike.
