Formed in Calgary, Canada in 2016, Widow’s Peak stepped out from the dead space between the shadows with a bottle of their own distinctive tech death poison. Marrying a distinctly alien brutality to a mind warping inventiveness, a distorted glamour with an incisive, mechanistic desire for dissection they have grown into an armoured carapace of creativity that sets them worlds apart from the more simply human proponents of the savage arts. Their debut full length album, Claustrophobe, is a Pandora’s Box of twists and trickery, beguiling liquid sounds and riffs like knives. The unnerving siren’s song of ‘Blood On The Breath’ draws you into the album’s claws and then the title track deftly and precisely tears you apart. From that point on there is no escape; before you can catch your breath you are surrounded by the chittering, insectile riffs of ‘Monochrome’, laid bare and desolate beneath the ‘Pillars Of Failure’, floating blind in the black seas of  ‘Heartworms I: Aorta’ – lost in an engulfing flood of wildly creative music that takes you beyond all your known boundaries. Widow’s Peak use their musical dexterity and colossal heaviness to forge something new, something shocking and enthralling. Claustrophobe is the individual, challenging, border ravaging music that technical death metal always promised to be.

Widow’s Peak have grown into a musical entity of breathtaking vision and ability. Rarely are debut full length albums so accomplished, confident and individual. Mixed and mastered by Colin Marston (Gorguts, Atheist, Artificial Brain etc) Claustrophobe is blessed with a crystal clarity that allows every intricacy, every atmospheric touch, every cascading solo to be fully appreciated. Meanwhile the album artwork, created by the band’s own Chris McCrimmon is rife with questions…a strangely unnerving image that is pregnant with possibilities and dark suggestion; utterly fitting for the multifaceted music that lurks beneath. On July 7th Widow’s Peak will offer up one of the most challenging and rewarding albums you will hear this year.

I walk without ceasing, without pause for rest or sustenance. My footsteps carry me over the rugged mountain passes, through the flower dusted meadows and along the cold and windswept shorelines. Yet no matter what vistas are spread before me, my eyes see nothing, for my spirit stalks darker halls than these. Internally I wander the shadowed colonnades of my grief, the black kingdoms of sorrow that will never see the sun. I gaze into the crimson, abyssal wounds that rend my heart, gasp in the cold waters of desolation that fall in unbroken cascades of agony about my soul. Two journeys, within and without, both solitary and never ending…

Painting the broad canvasses of expansive soundscapes in the cold, twilit hues of emotive black metal, with their debut album, Time Held Me Grey And Dying, Ofnus seek to reunite listeners with their own melancholy, to set their feet upon a path that will lead them down into the darkness within, to the abandoned temples of sorrow, silence and solitude. Ofnus interweave searing emotion and towering drama, creating a remarkable balance between delicate intimacy and thunderous pomp and circumstance. The disparate elements of their music – the magnificent guitar solos, the shifting tempos, the fiercely intense vocal exhortations, the devastating drums and enticing melodies – are all drawn together beneath a shroud of dreams and sadness. From the aching lilt of ‘Grains Of Sand’ to the heart-stopping emotional power of ‘The Endless Grey’, the introspective reflection of ‘Monody’ to the blackened, ashen grandeur of ‘Exulansis’ and the metallic might of ‘Fading Dreams’, Time Held Me Grey And Dying is a vast tome of tales to be discovered. And throughout every chapter, the whispering ghosts of forgotten grief will light sparks of pain in the cold ashes of your memories.

Despite only forming in the winter of 2021, Ofnus have carved out a debut album of magnificent accomplishment, captivating atmosphere and rare emotional power. Recorded at Woodcraft Audio (Brutality Will Prevail, The Drowning etc) and Necroshroud Studios (Black Pyre, Entität etc) Time Held Me Grey And Dying sounds rich and deep, textured and all enveloping. Two years on from the gruesome horrors of their Murderous debut album, AcidBrain have returned. Once again the locked doorway in your brain that keeps the most chilling nightmares of stomach churning atrocities at bay will be broken down. Like a pack of screaming devils the warped imaginings of multi-instrumentalist Anthony Cotter and his vocalist and collaborator Steve Rasmussen will tear through the corridors of your mind, searing and scarring, leaving carnage in their wake. It’s hard to believe that Cotter and Rasmussen could have concocted an album more vicious, heinous and heartless than Murderous, but watching you from the shadows gathered in that dark corner is The Lust Murders – a wicked, blood-drenched beast of a record; a soulless thing with empty eyes that exists only to maim and kill. Filthy, rusted riffs like serrated blades tear at the flesh while strange, perverse grooves sway and twist in the arterial spray. The unnerving introduction of ‘The Lust Murders’ itself should be enough to have the sane and civilised running for the hills, but any who wait too long, consumed by curiosity, will soon find themselves choking in the ‘Intestinal Noose’. Once you’re trapped in this crimson palace, haunted by the revenant corpses of death metal and grindcore, there’s no escape until a truly criminally insane cover of Slayer’s ‘Dead Skin Mask’ delivers the final, fatal thrust. Rampant and repugnant this is an album beyond all hope of redemption.

Draped in the hideous imagery of infamous horror artist Martin Trafford and featuring guest appearances from the likes of Vulvodynia and NecroticGoreBeast, The Lust Murders will crawl from its basement lair on July 28th. With no controlling conscience or moral guidance – you are too dangerous to be allowed to live, yet too impossibly fascinating to destroy. So here you are, in your gore-soaked paradise prison, wading through the carnage of your discarded projects. You breed them, feed them, dissect them and rebuild them; following in your father’s footsteps. You break them, consume them, pulverize and shatter them, before they join the rotting collection of offal, swaying gently from their hooks. And your father watches you through his electric eye, his imperfect son, his beloved creature, his genetically engineered monstrosity.

If the malicious beast that is brutal death metal could be strapped to an operating table, if its essence could be extracted like spinal fluid with a long, cruel needle, then within that viscous, poisonous fluid you would find the sound of Tortured. This international assembly of elite exponents of the brutal arts have defined the rotten soul of death metal’s darkest offspring. It has been a long wait since 2020s The Limb Collector EP first hinted at what Tortured were capable of with its short, sharp shock of violence, but every second of those intervening years has been justified by the arrival of their full length debut. Genetically Engineered Monstrosity is an absolutely electrifying, breathtaking, bludgeoning assault. The gloriously grotesque riffs are carved from your flesh by the six string scalpel of Oscar Ortega (Cystectomy, Strappado etc) while the blast beats rain down like hammers to the skull and ghastly, inhuman vocals vomit from the abyss. The relentless, remorseless ‘Human Bait’ is deaf to all pleas for mercy, while the crushing pressure of ‘Boiled To Death’ will see internal organs exploding from every orifice. To the last devastating notes of ‘Gruesome Chastisement’ Genetically Engineered Monstrosity is utter nirvana for those hopelessly addicted to the bloody and battering sounds of extreme death. This is a master class in absolute bone breaking brutality.

Mixed and mastered by Alexander Borovykh at Tsun Tsun Productions (Aborted Fetus, Insect Inside, Kraanium etc) Genetically Engineered Monstrosity hits hard, with unfathomable levels of power; when Comatose Music set this killer loose on July 7th the levels of destruction will be overwhelming. Housed in the grim and grisly artwork of scene legend Jon Zig (Deeds Of Flesh, Defeated Sanity, Houwitser etc) Tortured’s debut album is going to be adored by gore hounds and blood junkies in every unsanitary underground dungeon the world over.
