At the risk of damaging our very reputation itself, Infernal Symphony bring you something truly unique, daring, innovative and, last but not least, gloriously stupid - The world's very-first dungeon skate album!!
'Slaves To The Grind' is your worst fears realised in audio form - a ridiculously awesome and totally radical blend of 90s hip hop (Inspired by the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series), dungeon synth, comfy synth, skater punk and chiptune magic!
Born from a single throwaway joke posted onto Infernal Symphony's Facebook page in June 2023, the resulting support for the idea of a dungeon synth album based on Wizards enjoying 90s skateboarding culture blossomed into a 32 minute ride of catchy fantasy tunes, video game splendour and dungeon synth grandeur all wrapped up with a tongue planted firmly in cheek!
After 6 solid years of making gloomy Satanic death metal and medieval soundscapes, I really needed a silly little project to work on in the background as well - just to keep things fresh, and have a bit of fun while I was at it. Ever the perfectionist, I also relished the opportunity to innovate and try my best to combine two genres I never would have thought would work together in a million years.
To my great suprise (and trust me, I'm just as surprised as you are that this is even a thing in the first place), the end results actually ended up being so listenable that I decided to offer them to you all for free to experience for yourselves (for better or worse).
The goal was to evoke 90s nostalgia, childhood memories of racking up high scores, and a warm and comforting feeling of looking back to a much simpler and more carefree time. Little did I know I would spent waaaayyyy more hours on making this than I reasonably should have.
I knew that the very concept of this was likely to catch the ire of many a dungeon synth purist, and as such the album is offered entirely for free because honestly, there's no way in hell I could ever justify this as a good idea. It's not representative of our typical sound or attitude towards composition, it exists purely as a thought experiment and as a bit of a laugh.
This endeavour did not come without it's challenges, mind. Not only has this album single-handedly forever destroyed my reputation amongst elitists and gatekeepers, but it also was a startlingly hard process to figure out how exactly to effectively balance my burgeoning grasp on dungeon synth tropes with the eclectic and iconic style of the legendary skater-punk video game series.
Part love letter to one of my favourite series of video games, part ill-conceived experiment, and part practical joke with serious and real musicianship behind it, get your earholes around 'Slaves To The Grind' now!
Now, let's ride off into the sunset (on our skateboard, naturally) and let the magic flow through your ears... *sad kickflip*
released July 1, 2023
Against my better judgement, this album was conceived of and recorded over a period of 5 days in June 2023.
Thanks to all Infernal Symphony fans and anyone who enjoys this monstrosity. Special Thanks to Glenn Bokay for drawing his initial illustration of a wizard skateboarding, as that was the jumping off point from which this entire sordid affair snowballed from. But seriously, awesome work dude.
So I can actually utilise this opportunity to do something worthwhile, I'd like to give a special shout out to Loot The Body ( lootthebody.bandcamp.com/album/skate-wizards ) and Skating Wizards, a tabletop rpg based around this very concept. Support small businesses!!
Extra special thanks to Mum and Dad, my love Chan, and Christopher Clough
