PRESS RELEASE:
Pyrrhic Salvation
When Society Crumbles
Self-released
14 February 2025
USA technical/experimental death metal act Pyrrhic Salvation presents their new EP, When Society Crumbles, scheduled for 14 February 2025.
Pyrrhic Salvation officially began as a project in 2015, founded by Salem, NH-based Michael Altobello, though its origins trace back to 2009 when Michael composed music under the name Stillborn Salvation. The project evolved from Stillborn Salvation, embracing more progressive death metal elements and a touch of dissonance, with Sagar joining on drums and bass, bringing extensive experience from solo projects, live performances, touring, production, and teaching.
Having Chrisom Infernium (Torture Ascendancy, Veilburner) on vocals, Pyrrhic Salvation released their debut EP, Manifestum I, in 2022, delivering a complex and discordant blackened death metal sound. Following Chrisom Infernium’s departure in 2023, Shawn joined as the new vocalist.
Primarily an online endeavor, Pyrrhic Salvation operates across state lines. Despite the distance, the trio demonstrates unwavering dedication to their craft. Their creative process involves Michael generating a wealth of ideas in sheet music form, Sagar transforming these into structured songs with drums and bass while assisting in instrument tracking, and Shawn delivering vocal performances and overseeing mixing and mastering.
The upcoming EP, When Society Crumbles, exemplifies this collaborative modus operandi. The process began with Michael having the title and developing a 15-minute framework of ideas featuring repeating motifs and musical themes. Sagar later expanded this framework of “When Society Crumbles” into three cohesive movements, each forming a track within the title piece. The tracks explore themes of societal collapse (Infrastructures), humanity’s potential (Insight), and the inevitability of self-destruction (Inferiority Complexed). The EP concludes with the standalone track, “Every Last Soul Unmade,” which ventures into themes of existential dread and humanity’s moral decay, adding an introspective complement to the tripartite title composition.
“We like keeping it diverse for influences just as much as we like the idea of a more natural and raw approach to technically oriented music,” Sagar states, Pyrrhic Salvation’s new EP indeed casts technical death metal in an unrefined, organic form. While this EP distances itself from the black metal elements of the debut, the group’s affinity for spiraling tenebrous black metal sounds remains evident. With a barrage of musical complexity, experimentation, and sporadic strange melodies, Pyrrhic Salvation churns out songs that are deliberately disorienting and chaotic.
Although Pyrrhic Salvation remains studio-focused, live performances and tours remain a possibility for the future.
