REVIEW: DAEONIA - CRESCENDO

DAEONIA - CRESCENDO (Candlelight Recs. - 2001): Daeonia´s follow up to their acclaimed debut album "Craven" is a symphony of darkness. This guys have big influences from gothic bands from the eighties but they have a more modern sound. The influence that comes to my mind while listening to "Crescendo" is the Sisters of Mercy. But I think that despite this similarity, Daeonia is reaching a different part of the gothic specter. What I like most from this album is the combination of the keyboards and guitars ( the former playing dark backgrounds and the later doing repetitive phrases in order to create the climate for the vocalist to do his job). The only thing that I would have changed is the mix of the second guitar that i could have mixed higher to give more power to the music (the way Paradise Lost did with "Draconian Times"). Songs like "Drowned" or "Meridian (12311999)" have solid hooks and strong melodies. I think the mood of the songs is deeper for example in "The Bridge and The Ashes" where the atmosphere is more oppressive with more presence from the keyboards or "Within The Blink of An Eye" with the piano and vocals intro. My favorite tracks: "Thoughtograph", "Within The Blink of An Eye" and "In Cimmerian Dreams". Contact: www.candlelightrecords.co.uk

INTERVIEW WITH DIAMOND

"Doctor Lost" is the name of this Brazilian band latest opus. We learned about the change of vocalist in their lineup in this interview with them. Let´s see what they told us.

How did you end participating on the "Mostrando A Cara" CD?

We were invited to record a track on this compilation, with more than 12 bands that also rehearsed on IGT Studio. This studio was our main rehearsal place that year and they made a selection with about 120 bands, to choose the best ones.

Is the new version of "Doctor Lost" different from the one recorded for the "Mostrando A Cara" CD?

The second and new version, as well as in all the tracks of the CD " Doctor Lost ", it was totally recorded live, with all the members playing at the same time, as if it was a rehearsal. The voices were recorded separately. There is still a perceptible difference in relation to the musical evolution of the band and it is much more heavy, the guitars and the bass are stronger than in the first version of the " Mostrando a Cara ".

Where the songs in the "Doctor Lost" CD recorded live in the studio?

Yes, all songs were recorded alive, only the voices were recorded in separate. We opted for that recording type because we were very well rehearsed, besides being faster and less costly. A detail, the CD was recorded and produced in an independent way. At first, we planned to place 4 musics in that CD, but in the day of the recording we decided to place the bonus track "Lost in E Minor" (instrumental).

Are you happy with the production in the "Doctor Lost" CD or would you have preferred another thing?

Actually, it was only recorded and mixed, in a few hours. The studio is good. The equipments, the atmosphere and the technical personnel, everything favored us. We couldn´t afford a real production, but afterall the final mastering pleased us all, mainly because it was a demo cd. It would be necessary a very larger time to really accomplish a professional production. Obviously we intend to have a better production on next recordings.

Are you influenced by classical heavy metal bands or are there also another bands from different styles that have influenced you?

We were influenced mainly by classical metal bands, such as Iron Maiden, Dio, Helloween, and so on, but we have many others influences on the band, depending of the member, such as Progressive Rock, Hard Rock and Power Metal.

What can you tell me about Diamond´s members previous bands?

Eduardo Sofiati - Upside Down - a power trio, playing covers of Megadeth, Metallica, Iron Maiden, among others. No mustache - another power trio, playing covers of Iron, Pantera, Metallica, among others.

Roberto Junior - Eros - a rock band, playing covers of Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and its own songs.

Rodnei Dias - Capitães do Além - a rock band, playing covers of brazilian bands and hard rock bands.

Leandro Bolla - Several bands, playing covers of brazilian rock bands and hard rock and heavy metal bands, such as Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath.

Fernando Goya (the new vocal) - Several bands, playing covers of progressive rock and heavy metal bands, such as Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Helloween, among others.

I noticed that most of your songs are over five minutes long. Is this a conscious effort or is this the way the songs come out naturally?

We join ideas and then we realize we have a long song. Many times we decide to cut some parts, to not make only long songs, which we like too.

This happens naturally, as we are creating the compositions. We didn't worry a lot about that detail, but we intended to vary the time of the songs. We join ideas and then we realize we have a long song. We have some music that are not in the CD " Doctor Lost ", some have more than ten minutes, another at the most five. I think that we really like to create long, but not complicated music.

Are you satisfied with Nimbus Studio or is there any studio or producer you would like to work with?

Yes, we are very pleased with this studio. The recording crew were very helpful. They set all instruments in a short time, and the sound we got from the recording become better than we expect. We intend to record there more times and we have some other producers and studios in mind. Our decision respects will be taken when we are ready for our next recording.

Are there plans of any tour to support the material?

We couldn't find a manager yet, to release the band, as we would like.

Yes, we would like a lot to play in countries of South America, mainly in Argentina. We have some contacts in Europe and Japan that can be summed up shortly, but for while we are just playing here in Brazil. This is because we couldn't find a manager yet, to release the band, as we would like.

A novelty: in the beginning of the year 2001, we had to stop for some time with the concerts, because we had vocalist Bruno Faria's sudden exit. The substitute is Fernando Goya, that soon will be presented to the public. In this moment, we are rehearsing and preparing the musics for the next shows. Last this phase, we will think again of recording, because we have a good material that is already concluded.

How different is the bass style of Rodnei compared to that of Marcelo?

Rodnei is very hard-rock and classical oriented, which influences of Glenn Huges, Roger Glover and Steve Harris. Marcelo used to play more harder, because of his metal influences.

Is there something more that you would like to say?

We would like to thanks this opportunity and we really hope to play in Argentina, we believe that the people will like a lot.

Well, regarding the CD "Doctor Lost", we would like to say that it will become rarity, because with the exit of Bruno and the coming of Fernando to the vocal of the band, we didn't intend to distribute it anymore.

Thanks for your support. Are you recording new stuff?

We are thinking of recording a multimedia track, besides a CD with a record label, contends ten songs more or less. For while, we are looking for a manager, playing in concerts and recording our rehearsals, what will give us larger experience and some B-sides. Thanks a lot.

REVIEW: BARRY GUY / PAUL PLIMLEY - SENSOLOGY

BARRY GUY / PAUL PLIMLEY - SENSOLOGY (Maya Recordings - 1997): Amazing album of duets between Paul Plimley on piano and Barry Guy on double bass. This two musicians are geniouses as you can hear in the tracks that compose this CD. This are thirteen tracks of pure madness, great improvisation, great compositional skills. The opening with"This is not much less than flat" is full speed with runnings and phrases from both instruments that play different things but in a really coherent way. This CD can open a lot of minds with its music, and with this attitude to music where the important thing is to experiment with mind and body. Jazz, fusion, experimentation, avant garde are some of the words that come to my mind when listening for example "Short steps until it finally dawned" or "Sensology" or "Jazz for now and never more" with their atmospheres and textures. I would like to pinpoint one of the tracks but the whole CD is amazing. Email: maya@eircom.net

INTERVIEW WITH DESOLATE

Epical and atmospheric, this band from Bulgary deserved a good interview and more promotion. We talked with vocalist Ilko Gizdov that gave us a detailed description of the band and their plans.

Can you tell me a little bit of the history of the band?

The band was founded in November 1992. The band members were Ilko Gizdov, Mladen Zahariev, Andre Mateev and Nikola Surbinov. At the very beginning the band had quite a different musical line because it was influenced at that time by the climax's peak of the death metal's wave. The band style was an intransigent and barbarian death metal one. In 1993 a new drummer Ivaylo Gamanov replaced the drummer Nikola Surbinov. In 1994 the band recorded its debut album " A Shadowed dying conscience ", which was released only in cassette LP format by the company "No Rip off Prod.". At the end of 1995 the band was joined by guitarists Vladislav Stoyanov, Metody Pavlov and Danail Andonov (bass guitar). In 1997 we recorded the demo " While the name is going away from the stone ". Later in the same year we have recorded our second album " Eventide of the orb and heavens ", which was released by the American company " X-Rated Records " and in the year of 1999 we have recorded a cassette live-EP, entitled " Four elements ", which included a studio cover version of the song "Sleepless " by the English band Anathema.

Can we say that your music is atmospheric and epic? Do you think this definition is correct?

It sounds good... yes....it is really epic one and so are the themes that cover it by the textual superposing, outlining the events of the eternal fight between the Light and the Darkness. Our concept for the creation of music aims somehow to influence subconsciously the mood of the people, to imply certain music reefs in such a way that to empower the listener to participate with part of his fantasy and the tuning of his soul's vibrations at the very moment of the listening. The text themes should inevitably lead to this direction.

How is "Eventide of the Orb and Heavens"?

Just imagine how striking it sounds Darkness in Heaven!!! Naturally matters should not be arranged in the literal sense only.... A picture that could be (say, the fact is that the night has fallen in the Garden of Eden, the Paradise) so provocative for your mind, the picture that could be assimilated in an appropriate way. Just imagine that after it was said all already, Eventide of....the Day would not come again ....!!!

Why was this album rereleased after it was originally released in 1998?

As we did not have publisher/company outside our country a very long period followed its promotion, which we did alone. Then the moment came when we were in negotiations with the company "X-Rated records", we liked the terms, but the schedule for the release envisaged the year 2000.

Do you have new material composed? Are you releasing it?

Oh, yes ...our new album is already completed and we are waiting soon free studio hours to record it. Our idea is to make this album more massive and compact one, having in mind that we have a new member (clavirist) who will enrich our music atmosphere, because the whole album has synthesizer parts.

How are the songs in Desolate composed?

The guitarist Vladislav composes the basic concept of our music, then the continuation of this idea is supplemented and enriched at the rehearsals with the other band members and the vocals are added at the end.

How do you see the scene in Bulgary these days?

The scene is not so small. for you it is very unknown one, for the most of you I suppose, but there we have such cute bands as: Demonism / Dark Dnversion /Embrace By Dark / Ork / Sabrax / Necromancer. The fact that it is small scene maybe helps in regard to a good selection, i.e. we do not have bands that play just to do something ... the fact is that in our country to maintain a band is too expensive matter. I think that in principle the one who is doing it in this country is investing efforts, will and is enshrining his soul in it.... In any case, not everyone of our scene could afford to invest enough resources in order to achieve the final target of what he is creating as a product.

Are you satisfied with the deal that you have with X-Rated Records?

Yes, it is a good start for us, because the "X -Rated Rec." is a cute company. Now, we are going to release our next album with the same label. this is significant enough, isn't it?!

How can you describe Desolate´s live act? Is it very climatic?

To make contact with the person's soul is a crucial moment when you present certain work of art.when your presentation is a live one, naturally you have to support it by strengthening vision, emotion, etc. ....the task is really hard one.... we, however, do not put on masks...(all the same, we like the bands that are using it), but anyhow it is achieved ...how to say.... may be .... a paranormal contact with the audience.

Which are your main influences?

The elite of the norway scene, I mean the several persons that support the life of the more than 20 bands, of course many other bands from the other parts of the world, but i purposely do not want to quote names here. ...they are so much! In addition to the main factor of the inspiration, the music, we maintain our pursuit to create art by the help of many movies, books, etc.

Any final words?

The music will urge you to discover the world of Nothingness!!! Thank you for your kind attention and the interview, Federico, to you and to the "Music Extreme zine"!!!

PATTON http://www.prohibitedrecords.com
New CD out. PATTON is a trio composed of brothers Sam and Max Bodson along with Philippe Koeune. Their music has been described as avant-rock and as "post-rock quicksand". Guitarists Fred Frith or Derek Bailey are often cited as influences. This album is an incredible opus of electric guitars, bass, and jazz-style drumming that re-imagines rock music.

COSTES / MARIE-ANNE / GROS 1000 (F) : "VOMITO NEGRO"

GB : Costes is probably the most famous underground artist. Active since 1988, he has produced 25 cds of obscene songs on weird broken music, and 12 "porno-social" operas, live shows being a violent crude mix of music and theater. He has performed more than 300 shows in Europa, USA and Japan.
In 2001, Costes, with Marie-Anne and Stéphane Androuin, is touring with a new porno-social opera called "Vomito Negro". It is a millenarist story at the beginning of the 21st century. An apocalyptic tale of the human fate, from primeval jungle to final big bang. All stage settings are video-projected.

INTERVIEW WITH CINICAL

From Mendoza, in the west of Argentina, from the Andes, comes Cinical, a metal band that has been fighting for a long time in this country where playing heavy music and survive is extremely difficult.

How has been "Beginning of the End" doing?

Very good, the 500 copies that were released through Sony - Chile were sold out , we sold them in underground record shops and some of them were released with a magazine from Mendoza.

"Beginning of the End" was recorded in 1999...Are you composing new material? Is it going to be released soon?

Of course, we are composing a lot, we have some new songs that sound incredible.

How has the music of the band changed since its conception in 1995 up to now?

In 1995, the line up of the band was different, and that made the music different, there were no keyboards and samplers, they had two guitars and they sounded really hard, with the new and actual lineup the music was modernized a little bit without losing the power.

How is the heavy music scene from Mendoza? Are there any new bands arising? Is the situation as difficult as in the rest of Argentina?

In Mendoza there are excelent bands, we see that unlike in the old times, the bands are trying to do things in a more professional way, before the "bands" played to have some funa and "suck" some wine.

Do you have planned to do any tour when the new material is released? For example coming to Buenos Aires or going to Chile?

Yes, in fact, in March we played in Santiago with Dogma, it was really good. The idea is going back to Chile this year and trying to do something also in Buenos Aires, we want to return also to provinces where we have already played like Córdoba, San Juan, etc.

Do you think that having your lyrics in english allows you to be spread in places where you could not do it if your lyrics were in spanish?

Totally right, but the main reason of singing in english is a phonetic matter, we like the way metal sounds in english.

How was the fact that Rodrigo Contreras (guitarist from band Criminal) produced "Beginning of the End"?

It was fundamental for our career, we learned a lot, from creating the structure of a song, to sound tricks or keys to sound in a way or another; apart from doing a first level job in "Beginning".He is a great person that we admire a lot, an incredible guitarist.

Were all the songs in "Beginning of the end" composed for the recording of it or was there some material from older times of the band?

For the recording, e preselection of songs was done, we had a lot, but for a monetary matter we had to left those that we liked most.

Why do you think that the heavy music scene from Chile is bigger than that from Argentina? Why do you think that cultural difference exists?

When we talk about Chile, we are talking about Santiago and that means that in capital cities there are more people. When we went there we were surrounded by really big and very professional bands, there the labels matter about you, there are radios only for metal music, programs and incredible places to play this music, in there the musicians study sound engineering and know what to do in a studio and to look for their sound. Here that is really different, sometimes you are an excelent band and you record and you sound like shit. I don´t really know why this cultural difference exists.

What can you tell us about the video that you are making?

We have a script, artists to work with, good will; what has stopped us a little bit is the money, but in any moment we will be on your screens.

How do you received the fact of being awarded as "Best band from Mendoza" in 1999 in the voting done by radio program "El arte de la rebelión" from the National University of Cuyo?

Serene, we didn´t know about this voting, we felt really good and we felt that the work that we have done was worthy.

Which is the role of keyboards and samplers in Cinical´s music? Do you use them to do effects and bases or maybe it exists the possibility of using them to do melodies, solos, etc.?

Basically the keyboards have the role of ding bases, there are only a few solos, the samples give the flashing touch to the songs, they are that noise that one is waiting for and that blows you away. Specifically, the keyboards and samplers create sonic atmospheres, textures.

Is there something more to add?

Thanks for this space on your site, thanks to people like you that are not trying to lucrate with art and support us unconditionally.

CLASSIC ALBUM: LIEGE LORD "MASTER CONTROL"

LIEGE LORD - MASTER CONTROL (Metal Blade Recs. - 1988): This is a total classic of speed/tharash metal de way it used to be in the late eighties: with great riffs, screeching vocals and virtuosism (guitarist paul Nelson is great shining through all the album). What makes this album music so original are the diversity of the riffs and the rhythms that are like a razorblade cutting through all the songs. What can I say of classics like "Eye of the Storm" or "Master Control"? What can I say of the great cover of Rainbow´s "Kill The King" ? That are fantastic ! Vocals like the ones of Joseph Comeau are not common nowadays (they can be piercing, subtle or anything he wants depending on the song). I can add just one thing: I hope this band gets reunited really soon, because they would be a bit of fresh air for heavy music. Favorite tracks: "Eye Of the Storm", "Soldiers Fortune", "Suspicion" and "Broken Wasteland". Contact: Liegelord2@aol.com

INTERVIEW WITH BARRY GUY

Double bass master and great composer Barry Guy gave us a music lesson in this interview. I hope musicians that read this find it really inspiring like I did.

Why did you choose the double bass as your main instrument?

In a way the double bass chose me. Before graduating to the instrument I played trumpet, Horns, trombone (valved) euphonium in the school wind band and a one stringed tea-chest bass in the dixie band. At one point the guys decided to upgrade the image and the number of strings on the bass instrument. So that's when I had my folks purchase a proper grown-up double bass. It all started at that point.

How big is the role of improvisation in your own compositions? Do you like to improvise over the work of other composers too?

The role of improvisation is (naturally) paramount in my compositions that are written for creative improvising musicians, but less so for players that are from a different musical tradition. I have a great interest in the writing of all composers and of course that includes improvisatory strategies.

How do you see/feel this balance between the double bass and the violin? Is that the sound that you got in your head when you compose?

Before writing anything, the composer has to visualize the soundscape whether it be violin and bass or twenty tubas! Your question about "see/feel the balance between the bass and violin" presumably refers to the duo with Maya Homburger. Maya plays a baroque violin which is a different animal to the modern instrument in many ways, but crucially the sound colours are arguably more differentiated and beautiful. These qualities I try to bring out, not only from the instrument itself but in relation to my own instrument, so I look for textures that enhance the sound spectrum of both instruments and place them in the best context of aural balance and support.

Do you think that will be possible some day for you to record Bach pieces or Telemann´s pieces, as Maya did, but with only the double bass? Would that be interesting for you?

NO. I enjoy playing some of the Bach cello suites at home, but I prefer to hear them played on the original instrument rather than the bass. There seems to be a spate of recordings at present which attests to the continuing advancment of bass techniques, and of course the problems of performance fill many pages in jounals dedicated to bass playing. In general I do not follow the line of species-hopping to fill repertoire gaps, however I can see the case for interpreting old musics that have a flexible instrumentation and invite serious thoughtful performances.

When you compose your own material, do you prefer to work on a special tonality or is your work completely atonal?

I compose in a way that is appropriate to the soundscape I am trying to envisage. The question of tonality or atonality does not really arise in terms of a method for generating musical thought. In the end it all depends on what you want to hear from the musicians that are the ultimate link in what hits the air-wave.

How different is your role in all the different projects that you have? For example on the collaborations with Mats Gustafsson/Raymond Strid or with Paul Rutherford/Phil Wachsmann...

My role is to listen, play and contribute to the music with the utmost integrity.

How is your work with the London Jazz Composers Orchestra?

I am not sure what you mean by "How is my work with the LJCO"....but let me make this interpretation: The years I have been writing for , and organising the group have been pleasurable, exh austing, frustrating, joyous, money losing, but ultimately exciting. I would not have missed it for the world. And although we are not doing concerts every year now, the joy is still there and the band is alive.

How do you compose your material? Do you translate what you have in mind to paper and then to the instrument or do you prefer to compose playing some instrument? Is the double bass your main composing tool?

I could write a book on this and it's not easy to answer in a short sentence.

Suffice to say that imagination begins the process, the players feature heavily in my internal questioning of what, how and why, which is often liberated by graphic gestures as a means of defining the larger picture. There after it's hard work with exhileration and depressions in equal quantities. I do use the keyboard for defining some parameters - more as a means of checking ideas, but not as the generator of music.

How different is doing solo concerts compared to working with other peopl e? Are those concerts more intimate and more experimental?

The obvious thing to say about the difference between solo and ensemble concerts is that in solo you generate the whole scenario yourself whilst in an ensemble you are part of the combined discourse. Either situation can be intimate and experimental. The focus is just different.

Why did you choose the London City Sinfonia to perform your "Falling Water" and "After the Rain" compositions?

Since 1973 I played principal bass in the City of London Sinfonia. I new the players well, the conductor and the general attitude of the orchestra, which was refreshingly open and of considerable ability. "After the Rain" was written for the excellent strings of the orchestra (as a commission) and "Fallingwater" (another commission from them) was not only a celebration of the orchestras 25th year as the CLS, but also it represented my last concert before moving to Ireland and therefore terminating my principal bass position.

Do you record all your improvisations and performances to have refreshing material to work with? Or do you prefer going to a studio and letting the music flow in there?

Recording improvisations is not a high priority in terms of the need to document everything. Depending on the circumstances we record live or in the studio, whatever seems appropriate to the concept. Often people record concerts for their own archives which sometimes works out to our advantage since we can negotiate for the tapes retrospectively.

Every musician has its own approach to music (specially when they play different instruments). How does the vision that other musicians have affect the final result of your compositions?

As I said earlier , I have a clear picture of the musicians I write for when composing, so their own individual musical signatures are important. In fact, I would say vital to the original structuring of a piece. Luckily these strong voices have also generated strong compositional ideas which in turn has allowed other musicians to enter the soundscape. I use the word lucky, because not every composer has the fortunate scenario of world class players interpreting the music.

REVIEW: ENTWINE - GONE

ENTWINE - GONE (Century Media - 2001): This is the second album of this finnish masters of gothic and melancholic melodies (The first one is called "The Treasures within Hearts"). The album has a great sound and it was mixed in the famous Finnvox Studios by Mika Jussila (yes, the same guy that has worked with Stratovarius, Nightwish and Childresn of Bodom). Great melodies and power are what flows in this recording since the beginning with "Losing the Ground". Some guitars parts are reminiscent of Paradise Lost ("One Second" era) for example in "Snow White Suicide". The amazingly beautiful keyboards of Ritta Heikkonen open one of the best songs in the whole album: "Closer (my love)" a slow depressing ballad where singer Mika Tauriainen can expand his vocals. In fact Tauriainen has a good voice and knows how to express what he wants through his voice and lyrics. What I liked a lot of this album is the great orchestration fundamentally between the guitars and the keyboards that conform a big part of Entwine´s signature sound. My favorite tracks: "Grace", "New Dawn", "Closer (My love)" and "Thru the Darkness". Contact: www.centurymedia.com and www.entwine.cjb.net

REVIEW: EMPEROR - EMPERIAL LIVE CEREMONY

EMPEROR - EMPERIAL LIVE CEREMONY (Candlelight Recs. - 2000): This is Emperor´s first live album, recorded on the tour of their album "IX Equilibrium"on 1999. Here you can see the total essence of the band, a band that if it sounds powerful in their studio albums here sounds one thousand times better. Also you can see how important is the band for the black metal genre (there are in there countless of inferior quality imitators). Ihsahn and Samoth are at their best here playing all the complex parts that you can hear in their songs without any difficulty. It is a pity that they say that they are not going to play live for a long time to concentrate on other projects because this band sounds great in this environment !! They open with a great rendition of "Curse You all Men following into a version of one of their best songs "Thus Spoke the Night Spirit". It is amazing!!. "I am The Black Wizards" succeeds in making you feel the darkness and depression on it. This CD has a great sound that helps to emphasize the whole performance. "An elegy of Icarus" follows with its enchanting melody and powerful keyboards. This recording has also great renditions of "Inno A Satana" and "Ye Entrancemperium". Emperor is a classic!!.Website: www.candlelightrecords.co.uk
