JUNKOWL RELEASE BRUTAL COVER OF AMY WINEHOUSE´S "BACK TO BLACK"

Just because you're a hardcore band doesn't mean you can't indulge in music outside your genre's realm. As collective fans of Amy Winehouse, Montreal's JUNKOWL are paying homage to the artist with a heavy, harsh, and guttural cover music video for her song "Back To Black".

Vocalist Jesse Frechette explains further on the band's choice to cover an Amy Winehouse song.

"When we decided to record a cover song, we knew we wanted to go with one that wasn’t metal to begin with and really make it our own. We chose Amy Winehouse because her lyrical content is very dark and I’ve always admired her honest and extremely personal writing style. My mom is a really big fan, so growing up, I got to hear her a lot around the house and in the car, etc. And as soon as I started figuring out the lyrics, I was sucked in. She helped me discover that a song doesn’t necessarily have to be brutal musically to be heavy. It’s all about how it makes you feel and, in that regard, I would consider Amy’s music quite heavy. Back To Black was always my favourite tune of hers, and the other members of the band all liked the song as well. Outside of metal we don’t necessarily share that much common ground, so once we landed on a song that we all liked and that portrayed a dark edgy vibe, we were sold."

Oozing with rock n' roll vibes, JUNKOWL is a slick combination of stoner riffs, hardcore energy, and groovy bass. Champions of the “En Route To Heavy Montreal”, which lead to them performing on Canada's largest metal festival Heavy Montreal in 2019, the quartet unleashed their debut album “Making Out With My Death” during June 2020.

The full length is a slow dark ride of heavy riffs; big dirty bass lines, in-your-face drums, and gut-wrenching screams telling tales of self-loathing, confusion, and intoxication. It's a solid album, something to enjoy with a few beers, smoke a joint, and bang your head off for 30 minutes.

BIO:

Theandric is a Detroit area heavy metal band whose four members' musical bond grew out of a shared love for legendary heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden and Metallica, but also the epic progressive rock of bands such as Yes, Genesis and Rush. Their original music explores a range of heavy genres from doom to thrash to progressive metal. Lead vocalist and bassist Paul Tiseo had been writing songs under the name Theandric since 2011, having previously released a successful EP called Up the Irons, yet he always held aspirations that Theandric would become a full-fledged band. It turned out that the right musicians were living right in his backyard. Guitarist Bill Bogue and drummer Matt Voss had been playing together in a successful 80’s tribute band and needed a bass player to fill in for some dates. During rehearsals, the trio discovered a mutual love for NWOBHM, the Big Four of Thrash, and seventies progressive rock.  Meanwhile, Tiseo happened to read a Craigslist ad posted by guitarist Aaron Wienczak, who indicated that he was looking for a new project to sink his teeth into. With a full lineup in place, the group started out jamming some classic Maiden tunes, but soon thereafter commenced work on a host of original songs.

"When the pandemic hit in March of 2020, we were in the middle of developing an assortment of songs with plans to hit local stages as soon as possible. When the state went into lockdown, we decided to put our energies full bore into songwriting and rehearsing," says Tiseo. After a few months, the band picked out four of their strongest songs and started recording at the Loft Studios in Saline, Michigan, with Tim Patalan of alternative rockers Sponge at the controls. "The pandemic became a blessing in disguise for us creatively, because we suddenly had all this downtime at home to work on our craft. I personally found myself overflowing with musical and lyrical ideas, and three out of four of the songs were written in those first few months."

With so many ideas flowing, why not record a full-length record? Tiseo responds: "As the band leader and main songwriter, I tend to be ambitious to a fault when songwriting. I love concept albums and working on several songs at once around a particular story or theme, but I knew that I wasn't ready for that kind of massive undertaking just yet. It was liberating to simply develop each song individually without feeling compelled to fit into any one particular subgenre. Nevertheless, I think the high-level production and performances on this EP demonstrate a cohesion that full length releases often lack. We are really excited to share these songs with the world, and our long-term goals are to play as much as possible, grow our worldwide fan base, and continue writing for a future full-length release."

Tattered fragments of the fabric of reality, we grasp for threads to draw us once more into the pattern. Drifting motes of light in the darkness, buffeted by the currents of air, fading sparks seeking only to dance our way back into the fire. In the spaces between the lines of the secret language, in the breaths between the syllables we glimpse the truth. Through word and ritual we reach for the final transformation; an inversion of miracles, a retracing of steps, an incineration of hypocrisies and a return to the heart. An ending of beginnings and an ending of endings, we cast the agonies of birth and death, the masks of deceit, into the flames of the pyre of throes...

The music of Senzar stands on the outside, but not looking in – looking further into the distant reaches of the night. Their full length debut, Pyre Of Throes, follows on from their 2018 untitled EP, wandering still further into an all consuming occult labyrinth of sound. The raw vocal invocations of Trevor McLave lead you onwards through starlit corridors and shadow shrouded chambers while malevolent melodies slip like cold knives beneath your skin. Intense, furious attacks burst open into grand frescoes of haunting twilight shades. Riffs bite and twist while full, rich bass tones wander a path all their own and everything locks, then drifts, then locks again. The lights of familiarity and complacency glimmer on a horizon that becomes ever more distant, then, one by one, flicker and die. In the cold embrace of songs like ‘Zenith’ and ‘The Sadness Will Last Forever’ you race under strange skies and mysteries unravel in your wake. Dissonant and alien, yet melodic and enticing the contradictions of Senzar entwine to create a new unnerving harmony. This is a band that follows their own lonely path, preferring the unbroken snow beneath the leafless trees to the mud and rubble of the well trodden road.

The origins of Senzar’s darkness lie in the Dublin death metal band Coldwar, whose final album, Pantheist, was released on Candlelight Records in 2014. Three members of the final Coldwar line-up remain together in Senzar, forging a new, dynamic course through increasingly tempestuous waters. Recorded at Trackmix Studio by Michael Richards (Cruachan, Graveyard Dirt, Putrefy etc) and adorned in the artwork of Sean Fitzgerald (Abaddon Incarnate, Coldwar, Sacrilege etc) Pyre Of Throes is a remarkable, individual and powerful creation, a true achievement of vision and imagination. When it is released on March 21st it will bring with it an opportunity to look deeper into the dark and a chance to journey into the vastness beyond the light.

CHIMERA RELEASE "GLORIA MORTIS"

After six years, the Warsaw band Chimera returns with new material. They play black metal with elements of heavy metal. "Gloria Mortis" is the newest, second in the discography album of the group leaded by Rafał "Charon" Mazur. The new album will consist of 

12 tracks sung in both Polish and English, enriched with three interludes with melodeclamation. Vocal parts for the new release were recorded by Grzegorz "Dante" Ptak, but in January there was a change and his place was taken by Krzysztof Gałecki from the band StygmatH, who will also be a rhythm guitarist.  

Music for new album was recorded in few places:

drums with cooperation of Filip Hałucha at Heinrich House Studio

guitars by Witek Nowak at Devil's Tail Production (Kira, Hellhaim)
