Chile over the past decade has been one of the hotbeds for extreme metal, particularly for bands that pay homage to, and expand upon, the pioneering work done in the genre in the 1980s and '90s. Of particular note is Chilean thrash metal, a scene bursting with bands who take familiar styles and just do them better, faster, and more authentically than almost anyone.

Critical Defiance were one of the more pulverizing acts in thrash in 2019, with their debut album on Unspeakable Axe (Misconception) marrying high-speed riffing to Bay Area-worthy melodies. Now their follow-up, No Life Forms, has arrived, and the band shows no signs of slowing down. It's clear from the opening notes that the three-year layoff was well-used, both to refine their compositions and to gather the massive amount of energy necessary for another full-on assault. The album is a whirling tornado of how-did-he-play-that guitar riffs, barked Tom Araya-esque vocals, and an indefatigable rhythm section that never misses a beat or slows the pace for a second. Surprisingly pretty lead parts and memorable choruses will keep you on the hook and break up the brutality just enough, like the squirts of cool water given to bloodied boxers between rounds.

With No Life Forms, Critical Defiance have exceeded themselves and made what is sure to be one of the best thrash albums of 2022.

Paxtilence was founded in 2011 to bring young, hungry thrash to the Nuremberg metal scene. Their stated mission is to play riff-oriented, driving thrash metal inspired by veterans like Kreator and Megadeth as well as younger powers like Warbringer, Pripjat and Space Chaser. After first live performances, the first EP "Cyclotomic Warfare" was unleashed on mankind in spring 2017, which helped to conquer more areas of Germany with concerts.

Towards the end of 2019, the four whipping boys retreated to their rehearsal bunker to create their ultimate weapon. With sharpened riffs and proper drum fire in the luggage, the new record "Wildfire" represents the next highlight of the Nuremberg thrash quartet.

The work goes in the best continuous fire manner directly into the ear and remains in the head.

Mixed and mastered by sound weapon master Kirill Gromada (Pripjat), "Wildfire" offers all maniacs a successful short vacation between nuclear fallout and post-apocalyptic anarchy.

As ambitious live performers, Paxtilence are now planning nothing less than to plunge whole europe into total thrash chaos from 2020 onwards!

OVERTOUN, Old-School Death Metal band, winner of the Chilean Pulsar Award (Chilean Grammys/Juno) for Best Metal Artist 2022, presents an unpublished and very special material. As part of the release of their latest album THIS DARKNESS FEELS ALIVE, the young metalheads from Santiago/Boston released a documentary full of history and energy that will take them back to recall their memories and key moments in their lives.

The routes taken by those who decide to dedicate their lives to music can be traveled in various ways. Get to know someone in a specific place, share the same vision, and dare to create an album. In this documentary, OVERTOUN shows what's inside the people that formed the band, going through the genesis of the group until the making of their new album.

NEGATIVE 13 RELEASE NEW TRACK "PAIN PRISM"

Post-punk sludge lords NEGATIVE 13 have released their newest single, titled "Pain Prism." The song comes from the band's forthcoming new album, Mourning Asteri.

Guitarist Edward Banchs comments on the song, "We love this song. Still in line with [the album's first single] 'My Scars Are Showing Again,' but it takes our sound to another level. This was the third song we wrote for the album and one that really pushed us creatively. Once we walked out of the practice space with this one we knew that we were ready to turn the corner on our past."

Nearly 20 years after the release of their self-titled debut, NEGATIVE 13 is set to return with Mourning Asteri. Formed in 1999, the Pittsburgh, PA quartet, NEGATIVE 13 (once known as Negative Theory), has continued to have a bit of an identity crisis. Describing their sound as post-punk infested stoner/sludge/doomcore, NEGATIVE 13 carries a curiosity that has allowed the band to reform after a hiatus with a wide-open palette of taste that reflects their artistic vision: interpret their brand of heavy metal however it is they feel fit. 

 

Originally disbanding in 2003 after releasing their self-titled debut, the members never stopped communicating the idea of returning to the stage after going their separate ways—reuniting, however, for several shows in 2008 and 2009. After years apart, 2021 proved to be the year that things fell back into place for NEGATIVE 13, with original members drummer Chip Reynolds, vocalist Scott Fisher, and guitarist Edward Banchs reforming with the intention of fulfilling their original vision—writing albums that would leave a footprint in the metal world. With the 2021 addition of bassist Mary Bielich, the band worked on completing their second album, Mourning Asteri, in late 2021, further elevating their sound to new heights.

BRUTTA RELEASE NEW SINGLE "DEVON"

 

PRESS RELEASE:

Brutta is blackened death metal hailing from São Paulo, Brazil, and the UK. They are a new arrangement of three seasoned musicians including drummer Gledson Gonçalves; guitarist/vocalist Adriano Ribeiro (Athemon) and bassist Tom MacLean (Athemon, ex-Haken). Together they have but one mission, to bring the heaviest music they can muster and melt the faces off fans everywhere at live performances and on record. They are excited to be releasing their debut self-titled album this year to fully show the metal world what they are made of and what they can bring to the scene.

Brutta has a second single out now entitled “Devon” where the listener is transported inside the mind of a sociopathic individual who is locked up in the confines of Devon, a prison made for violent offenders. This prisoner can’t wait to escape to continue pursuing his victims. The band explains further:

“Starting with a deliberate expression of the desire to kill, our character murmurs a creepy, evil, scary melody. Pleased by the voices in his head, a prisoner to his own sick mind, he unleashes the desire to hurt and provoke horror. The instrumental is filled with dark melodies causing a very obscure sentiment. With a very strong chorus, the song transforms into a memorable experience of assault and battery, as in the end, our prisoner seems to jailbreak.”

“Devon” is the seventh of eight tracks, each one more pummeling and unforgiving than the last. They span themes such as religion and disturbed individuals, all with blast beats, brutal gutturals, and death metal riffs. They take all of their influences and wind them together into something daring, mysterious, and unforgettable. They are recommended listening for those with an interest in Bloodbath, Dark Funeral, and Morbid Angel.

NAFRAT RELEASE "VEINS" EP

Short Bio: Nafrat is a Singaporean death metal band formed in 2003. The band released 'Chaos Unleashed' (Demo 2005), 'Invoking The Masses' (EP 2005), 'Through Imminent Visions' (Full-length 2008) and 'Abnegation' (Full-length 2018). With the release of the band's first full-length 'Through Imminent Visions' in 2008, via Vrykoblast Productions , it opened doors for them to play numerous live shows across Asia particularly Indonesia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia etc. Despite the positive reception towards their debut full-length effort, the band took a step back and went on a hiatus due to 'personal reasons'. Nafrat made a comeback in 2018 which saw the band releasing the second full-length 'Abnegation' via Brutal Infection Records (Indonesia). The sophomore album received overwhelming response across the metal community in Asia. Nafrat has also opened shows for the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Misery Index, Obscura , and Immolation among others. The band went through line-up changes with the introduction of a new drummer in 2020. Despite juggling the tough schedules among its members and strict social restrictions in place during the global pandemic hit, Nafrat recorded a 3-track EP in 2021 titled 'Veins'. The EP sees the band in new territory with the exploration of darker atmospheric soundscapes, coupled with the familiar blistering style of blackened death metal that they produced in previous releases. 'Veins' officially dropped in Feb 2022, made available for free digitally on the band's official Bandcamp and most major streaming platforms. Presently, Nafrat has also started writing new material, hopeful of releasing the third full-length album in the near future.
