"One of the most important things about writing this album was being true to my influences both musically and in just everyday life. I wanted to represent lyrically the things that truly interest me the most, more so than cliche genre standards. I love horror movies as much as the next guy but I for sure love video games much more. I mean, the opening track is based on Hellraiser, which is one of my favorite horror movies, but beyond that, it's mostly much more nerdy things. It kinda started with one of the concepts being "if I can write a song about Tomb Raider 2 and make it fit the music, then I can write literally about anything I want". That was kinda the liberating point for me. It was really the impetus to make something I always viewed as being limited that much more expressive. So after that, I really opened up and wrote songs about classic games I love like Quake, Morrowind, Silent Hill, etc, along with other subjects I was into at that time..weird Lovecraftian shit and even Star Wars novel lore. In fact, the name itself came from a Star Wars book i read years ago. I made note of the name and years later finally found a place to use it."

Norwegian Black Metallers Taakeferd released their new album "Mitt septer for et tusenårsrike" this year. A new flame has ignited the old beast which manifests itself in the new album titled "Mitt septer for et tusenårsrike". With no intention of reinventing the genre, MSFET rather stands in the tradition of the old, disgusting, dirty and aggressive black metal sound. Still undeniably Black Metal, but with a more distinct hint of punk. Lyrically, the album deals with the classic themes of death and vanity, the ethical and categorical limits of human existence, and the boundaries of truth and knowledge.

WAXWORM RELEASE "MEA CULPA"

WaxWorm, the industrial project of Duncan Evans (Formerly A Forest of Stars) and Arthur Brown (Based in Australia) have released their song "Klexos" via NextMosh. The track is taken from their upcoming release Mea Kulpa which will be out on July 23 2021 via Trepanation Recordings.

Duncan commented 

'Klexos’ is a word invented by John Koenig which means ‘the art of dwelling on the past’. The mood of the track — sombre, reflective, melancholy — seemed to fit with that theme. I like the hypnotic and minimalistic melody, which was originally composed as an ambient loop by Arthur, before we fleshed it out with dark and rhythmic electronic textures, and a doom-laden drum groove. I hope the music is evocative and somehow tells an emotional story without needing lyrics. We’re really pleased that NextMosh have premiered ‘Klexos’, and we hope you like it as much as we enjoyed creating it!

Mea Kulpa is the product of several collaborative sessions between its creators (some in-person and some conducted remotely) which began in 2008. The project was shelved and revisited several times, and was finally completed in 2021.

The album is an expression of and a reaction to the fear, loneliness and dejection that can arise in all of us as we navigate the uncertainties and contradictions of human existence. Accordingly, the record is sometimes unsettling and disturbing, but it also brings catharsis and consolation.

Duncan commented: I’m really excited that Mea Kulpa, the upcoming WaxWorm album, is going to be released this summer. The project, which is a collaboration between me and my friend Arthur Brown, grew out of just throwing sounds and ideas around and letting the music evolve naturally. We wanted to make something heavy without using guitars, and we also wanted to borrow some ideas from electronic music and industrial. We’re really proud of the way the music turned out. We call dark electro-chaos, and we hope you enjoy the record. 

Often abrasive and noisy, but also rich with melody, the music is mostly electronic and largely instrumental. Incorporating brooding ambient soundscapes, skittering beats, dissonant noise and distorted synth patterns, the record draws influence from styles including dark ambient, industrial, metal, and electronic dance music. Occasionally, recordings of household objects and real instruments are twisted and contorted to fit within the makeup of the otherworldly synth textures. Lyrics and vocals were only used where they seemed to be necessary, with layered vocals on a few tracks sung by Evans and Brown.

Mea Kulpa is an immersive electronic sound collage that juxtaposes bleakness and anguish with warmth and redemption.

HEXENKLAD TO RELEASE "HEATHENHEART"

Hexenklad (ft. members of SIG:AR:TYR, Eclipse Eternal, Pagan Ritual) comes from the depths of the Canadian forest, wielding a new album “Heathenheart” to be released on CDN Records on July 23rd that is sure to intrigue fans of melodic death and folk metal. The title track will be the first single, and right now you can take a peek at the teaser trailer for the full length.

“Heathenheart” is following up 2017’s “Spirit of the Stone”, which was the first look into the black metal influenced folk band. Since that first release, Hexenklad has updated its lineup and the result is more intensity and rawness in the new music. They explain further in their own words:

“We are extremely proud of this new album “Heathenheart”. It is a perfect representation of all of our varied influences and personalities. From the coldness and rawness found in Black Metal to the uplifting and memorable melodies found in Folk Metal, to the hooks and choruses found in Heavy Metal, this album has everything. It’s heavy, it’s raw, it’s uplifting, it’s honest, it’s uncompromising, it’s unique and it’s varied. Every song is different and yet connected.”

For the creation of this album, Hexenklad emphasized their appreciation for Folk and Black Metal and wrote songs that meant something and garnered an immediate response from them. They work together collaboratively, each member adding their own flair to a song. “Heathenheart” was recorded at Shiver Sound Studios by John Chalmers; mixed at BWC Studios by Greg Dawson; mastered at West West Side Music by Alan Douches and the cover art is done by Darek Zawiązalec of Black Forest Forge.

Hexenklad is suitable for a wide range of headbangers, especially fans of Moonsorrow, Amon Amarth and Ensiferum.

Guitarist Tuomo Salonen comments: ”This was the first song written for the album. We also chose to release it first, since it is a very meat-and-potatoes heavy metal song with three guitar solos and a fist-pumping middle section. Well, that and its length. The lyrics are about the delicate relationship between the artist and his inspiration. Creativity will be a carrying theme throughout the album”.

HELLGRIMM RELEASE "THE HUNGER"

Hellgrimm is a power trio forged in 2018 that delves into the darkness of addictions, death, and demons with stories both fictional and based in truth. The rhythmic melodies are punctuated by haunting solos, and a piercing voice gives hope that there may be paths out of the darkness.

Nostalgia for the 1970s stadium rock era weaves through this gut punch of guitar wizardry weaving spells of destruction and searing vocals rising from the chaos. Hellgrimm fights demons with their music, both real and imagined, physical and psychological. 

Hellgrimm released its first full-length album, "The Hunger," in June 2021, and three EPs; the self-titled debut (March 2019), “Elysium” (February 2020) and "Hellgrimm: Live" (March 2021).

Hellgrimm has had the honor of opening for such acts as Geoff Tate, Powerman 5000, (hed) p.e., Dizzy Reed (Guns & Roses), Michale Graves, Tommy DeCarlo (Boston), Vicious Rumors, Pissing Razors, and Goatwhore.

Writer/guitarist Jerry Connor began his music obsession in his teens on South Padre Island, Texas. After years of playing in local bands, his world turned upside down when a fateful accident almost cost him his left hand and his life. Following two major surgeries, many doctors told him he would never play guitar again. Undeterred, Jerry studied music theory and composition at the University of Texas Pan American in hopes of becoming a composer.

Jerry rehabilitated his hand through years of relentless practice and was able to play guitar once again, moving around the country to work with national acts. In 2002, he landed in San Antonio, Texas, and began writing the music that would conjure the band, Hellgrimm.

Drummer/bassist/vocalist Erica Missey fell in love with music watching her grandfather and uncle play guitar in her childhood. She started playing trumpet when she was eleven and enjoyed playing through high school and college.

After years of concentrating on her art career (animation credits include “Space Jam” and “The Prince of Egypt), Erica returned to making music as a bassist. She met Jerry Connor in 2002 and joined him to form the band Monkeysoop. After years of playing bass and finding her voice, Erica switched to drums in 2010 and became the primary singer when Hellgrimm was conceived in 2018.

Hellgrimm has the aid of talented bassists Joshua Pechawer and Adrian Cavazos and drummer Robert Garcia at shows.

Hellgrimm’s third album and first full-length LP features ten tracks written in 2018-19 and recorded in 2020 with Jerry Connor on guitar and Erica Missey on vocals and drums and both musicians sharing bass tracks. "The Hunger" also includes five bonus songs recorded live in early 2021 with Jerry Connor on guitar, Erica Missey on vocals and bass, and Robert Garcia on drums. “The Hunger” is available for downloads and streaming now and will be available on CD soon late June 2021.
