Mysterious, opaque, and impenetrable. Like the dense fog that shrouds the winters of depopulated, rural Catalonia, Imperi De Tenebra is a new band of unknown origin and membership, rooted in raw black metal yet also featuring touches of dark ambient and dungeon synth.
As in the case of this first album, Miravet MCCCVIII – Sobre el Setge i Posterior Caiguda de l'Ordre dels Pobres Cavallers de Crist, Imperi De Tenebra always grounds its lyrics on brief and forgotten episodes from Catalonia’s history, hidden from the mainstream narrative. The band uses archaic Catalan and real, centuries-old characters, who are now almost anonymous, sometimes recounting the events in the first person through letters or other forms of narration. All of this is done in an objective and faithful manner, avoiding value judgements and steering clear of the hackneyed nationalism centred on the War of Succession or the fall of Barcelona to the Bourbon troops.
As its name suggests, this debut album revisits the siege and surrender of Miravet Castle after the Templars were betrayed and persecuted by the Pope and the King of France. Other medieval episodes, always minor and bloody, are already feeding their raw and minimalist chronicles, so it would not be surprising if Imperi De Tenebra were to release new works soon.
